Loosing against players way worse than you

I noticed a funny type of losses i tend to get.

Failry often I will loose games against players that are a fair bit weaker than me. One of two things happen:

1) I recognize their "strategy" of playing and I know i sucks, for instance sometimes you can see that his only "thing" is to move his queen around looking for an openng, maybe using a horse for support. I go JEHSUS what it this guy doing, its so easy to counter it while i develop, and doesn't take it seriously. And then I blunder and give him that opening that there was absolutely no need to give him :)

2) Another kind of game is me fast getting an advantage,. everything going according to plan, maybe he is down a bishop or two and some pawns, and then I messing it up by one REALLY momentous stupid mistake, like missing that he can checkmate me with his bishop and queen aligned.

The interesting thing is that my mistakes are far "worse" in these sorts of games than when I play players my own level or better. Sorta like my brain thinks "we got this guy beat, lets go on holiday, you gotta lay this one without a brain".

Is there anything I can do except be aware of it? I am already, but the awareness doesnt do me much good lol

Play slower time controls.

I can't because at my level half the players just leave the game and don't resign when they see that they will loose. The longer the time limit, the more you need to wait when they do that, 10 minute games means half the games you have to wait 8 minutes while the other guys clock runs out. So the site doesnt really have a working long-game opportunity for live for people my level. I imagine players with better ratings are more serious about it and resign when they recognize they lost the game.

There's idiots at every level, admittedly more at lower levels, but tbh that's just something you have to put up with in online chess, open a tab and watch something on youtube for a while, playing one slow game will do more for your chess than playing several blitz games imo.

Doncha think I an get to 1200-ish with 5 minute games? I could start doing the thing where you have 3 days per move as well maybe. But long games in love chess just doesnt work. I wish they had some sort of karma system so you could give the quitters antikarma like reddit. And maybe a setting to block players with low karma. *sigh* but the site owners dont seem to care.

I think that live chess does have a system where people who repeatedly violate the fair play policy - ie. disconnect or time out in lost positions eventually get paired with others who do the same.  So if you contine playing this should come into effect.  Can someone confirm that this is the case?

Naw, I played 2600 games, I always resign if i consider it hopeless or if i get distracted, off course I also "disappear" sometimes because I gotta do something or i loose connection or whatever, but its in total random times in games and not in loosing positions. And I still get tons of the quitters.

Its related to rating though, I yoyo between 1050 which seems to be my true "rested and concentrated" level and 900ish which is what I am worth if I havent slept for 24 hours or if I am playing with my girlfriend talking to me at the same time. And there are WAY more quitters in the 800 and 900 rated players than in the 1000 rated players.

For whatever reason I also discovered that there are much more quitters in 10 minute games than 5 and 3 minute games. I dont know why. Even if the 5 minute guys get thrashed in the first minute, they still stay or resign, they quit way less so I much prefer the 5 minute games.

I'm thinking the quitter% decreases with rating, so when I get to 1200 there are so few quitters that long love games becomes an option.

Perhaps i was wrong and that system hasn't been implemented.  I haven't had too many issues with quitters and my blitz rating is pretty low although I only play 5min games in blitz.  In longer time controls I've only played a couple of games but no issues yet.

Not sure what the solution is here - correspondence chess is one option but it doesn't have the same feel as live chess for me - either that or head to your local club and play OTB.

I think at your 1272 blitz rating you are already out of the swamp of quitters :) I really dont see a lot of them above 1050.

I only lose to low-rated players if I time out. Otherwise, I've never lost to someone 100 points below me.

Guess you just have to decide what is more important; avoiding fools or playing slower time controls so you can get better at chess

blueemu

I've lost to a player rated nearly 1000 points below me.

Then again, I drew against Tal in a simul.

So it averages out.
