Losing by Abandonment Despite Strong Connection

Hi.

I've probably lost at least half a dozen games in the last month because my Internet connection supposedly gave out mid-game. When this used to happen, the timer on the side of the screen would freeze and start flashing, indicating that I've lost connection. I could switch WiFi networks or even refresh the page and get right back to the game.

Now, when I lose connection--even if my computer and chess.com both insist that I have a strong connection--there is no indication of it. My opponent's timer will just run down all the way to zero, and when it does, and I don't win on time, I get suspicious. Then I refresh the page or switch networks, and THEN I learn that I was disconnected fifteen minutes ago and I've now lost on time or by abandonment.

Why does chess.com do this?? Is there any way around it? I used to be able to refresh the window or disconnect/reconnect my Internet to restore the connection and resume the game, and now I lose by abandonment if I'm gone for a millisecond. And worse, I keep losing connection despite not actually losing connection, which means I have to wait for my opponent's entire timer to run out before I realize it. This is a large amount of time to waste staring at a game I'm inevitably going to lose for no reason. I'm getting really upset with this website for doing that to me over and over again. I'm afraid that soon I'll get labeled as a "poor sport" and be forced to only play with other poor sports, which would be completely unfair since I'm not actually leaving any of these games.

This happens sometimes,

this happens to me all the time. my internet connection is strong but it just starts acting like the connection is lost. It is NOT LOST- i can do anything on the internet and it behaves normally while this is happening. In the past I could refresh it and occasionally it would 'wake' up. When I play on my phone, this NEVER HAPPENS and i am using the same wifi but maybe because of the cellular back up, it doesnt disconect. I have no idea but it sux

When your computer claims to have a strong connection, it is referring to the connection between your computer and the "network" it connects to... the router in your own home.

That "strong connection" meter would still be showing 100% even if you weren't connected to the Internet at all.

Yes chess.com is pretty shiitty when it comes to their servers. It happens to me all the time as well. Sometimes chess.com will say that I have a "poor connection" yet when I run a speedcheck it shows around 200mb. I tried following their recommendations regarding cookies, cache, etc but doesn't seem to work. They're either too lazy or too incompetent to fix, I don't know, but either I sure as hell ain't buying premium from a company like this that clearly doesn't care about its potential customers.

I have this issue too, whatever the origin. Seems only the last month or so. So many games where my opponent's clock was counting down, only to find it's game abandoned in their favour. Or you move, but your clock is still counting down. No notification of a connection issue, either a flashing clock (as used to be in the past), or the white pop-up box. Sometimes I do get the pop-up box when there's no connection issue, i.e., moves and going back and forth just fine. Now I just have to refresh every 10 seconds "in case" it's not my opponent thinking, but rather a connection issue. Of course upon refreshing it connects just fine, which makes no sense to me. Not much fun. Can't expect rated games to go the distance under such conditions. Curious as to how things look on the opponent's side. Does it say you've disconnected when these things happen? Maybe they report you for quitting games, who knows. On unrated games at least you can't even see the connection status most of the time, the country flag etc. If the problem is the user etc. as is always the official party line, then there needs to be a better system for notifying players or auto-refreshing the game etc.

This has only happened to me on a couple of occasions, like this evening. The problem is that it makes it look like poor gamesmanship. Then I lose concentration worrying and feeling guilty about it and I can't focus on playing. I don't like that it's thought of as abandonment, more "Internet connection lost" because it's no fault of the player.

Happens constantly. Trolls here always blame the user, even though internet connection is fast and solid with every other app.

Happens to me a lot I will make a move, my connection bar is full, I'll be waiting for my opponent who takes forever, next thing I know the connection status drops to red for no resason and I have 2 seconds left to move.

How do I get the rating back if I lost due to this?
