Losing on time with 2 seconds left and premoving

Sort:

I just lost a game on time when I had 2 seconds on the clock before my move began and i premoved. When my opponent made his move my game instantly said 'lost' before even the premove could be made. My clock still said 2 seconds:

(Picture shows time on my side when the message that I lost on time was shown)

When i go back to analyse the game it also says my move started with 2 seconds on the clock, then it just says 0.0.

It cannot be the lag on my end, I have a high end connection and i don't experience this issue (that i've had multiple times on chess.com) on other chess sites.

This issue is frustrating.

There can be lag between you and the server as well, though client side processes and network traffic can introduce connection issues that you may not notice. For things you can control, check out the following: https://support.chess.com/article/213-how-do-i-fix-my-disconnect-lag-issues

Another thing to note, premoves are stored client side and each one is sent to the server immediately after receiving the opponent's preceding move, so small disconnects and lag can result in the official clocks expiring before the move reaches the server, even after lag compensation.

I understand that a premove is stored client side and that there is 'some' lage between the client and the server, but two whole seconds?

And why only with chess.com? I play competitive shooters and never experienced lag. I use different chess websites and while a clock might adjust for 0.1 seconds I never experience the above.

This issue caused me to quit playing on this website, then after about a year of playing on other sites (while still paying for premium on this site) i tried once more to see if the issue was fixed, and after 3 days of playing I already encountered 2 situations like the one above.

Thanks for the article, I'll check it out and see if anything improves.

In regards to other sites, their locations and the path the traffic takes to each is mostly different, so a problem between you and chess.com likely won't impact other sites. Also, other sites handle lag differently, either allowing all lag, allowing a lot more, or using some other mechanic to trust timestamping of moves and disregarding lag from that point (or some combination to f those).

For graphical games, dropping a few packets here and there aren't too problematic. You might get some small freezes or jumps but it can just keep going and all traffic is asynchronous and will just update when it's received between systems.

A chess site has to wait every step for traffic and with time clocks on both clients and the server, it has to handle the lag as it happens and decide what to do with it.

The chess.com clock has been broken since last night. Just lost 100 bullet points this week with 10 seconds at a time disappearing in chunks, down to the first move eating up 10 seconds, or me losing from 5 seconds on a premove from a winning position.

This way* Even the chat lagging me out. Hopefully they fix this by next maintenance.

I'm not aware of any major issues with the Live server.

this, and no match making filters so you have to play against players on the other side of the world and you know that's what's best for ping performance in a 1 minute bullet match. Chess.com is dumb

Ilampozhil25

if someone made a thread where everyone who didnt get any problems were asked to post, many MANY people would post

this set of people who constantly get problems are a very loud minority

The site does have filters to try and prevent players with higher latency from being paired with players with higher latency.

I just pre-moved a mate in 1 against an opponent and was declared the loser and "your time ran out before your move reached the server". I had 0.7 seconds left when I made the premove and still lost. Amazing experience.

I just premoved mate in 5 with 5 seconds left and lost on time 2 seconds later. What a joke. The clock didn't even go down. Just said oops you lost. I had just promoted a second pawn to a queen as I traded my rook for their last pawn to ensure I won the time scramble and didn't let them promote.
