loud breathing

I was in a live tournament my yesterday. My first time experience was okay. But I guess I had a question why people tend to breathe reallly heavily during the game? Do people gasp for more air when they think? Do they feel better that way?? Also I don’t understand why some seem so annoyed when I took my time thinking….

You probably stumped them with your stockfish like move, Oxygen fuels the brain. Take it as a comp,

was it like steadily deep breathing or was it like they'd think for a long time, exhale loudly and stretch in their seats or something?

typicalpaul

I would have got up and paced around and grabbed a drink on them

Wow we're analyzing breathing now, huh.

I've never noticed people breathing abnormally during tournaments...

MisterWindUpBird

Just tune them out completely.

EscherehcsE

Is the OP sure this wasn't a tournament for asthmatics?

Probably you overthink. I overthink everything when I was playing ping pong. Just ignore thoughts that are not beneficial.

Were the tournament players using chess clocks? If so, you're allowed to use all of the time on your clock, so they shouldn't have been annoyed at you taking time to think.

@B1ZMARK it was the latter lollll. I am very sensitive to noises. And for one moment all I could hear is extremely loud exhalation from all directions. Lolll and people were wearing masks too. Maybe that’s why they lacked more oxygen??

@EScherehcsE lolll I was not too distracted by loud breathing….I was just curious! And yes there is a clock….I know I could use my time but it kinda concerns me when people make grumpy noises when I think for a long time.

Geez, you and Fischer...

Sounds like you need to get pre-clearance from the TD to wear ear muffs.

Nghtstalker

Masks definitely decrease oxygenation and increase CO2.  Also many chess players sit leaning over a board which doesnt improve lung expansion.  And yes heavy concentration uses more O2 so it is possible some people were breathing heavier.

If you are using a clock use the time as u wish.

How did u do?

If someone indicates dissatisfaction over the fact I'm taking too much time, my natural inclination is to slow down even more, haha.

But really, if your opponent voices his dissatisfaction too vociferously, you should inform the TD of your opponent's unsportsmanlike behavior.

@EscherhcsE I wore earplugs during my exams loll and well next time If they are impatient, I would just try to ignore them lollll......I don't feel comfortable involving the TD about such a small thing (as seen from TD's perspective)

@Nghtstalker Okok. That confirms my guesses then. I lost three games and won two. Hahaha. I have learned so much from my losses like how to control my emotion. I remember I was almost on the verge of crying when my opponent tried to comfort me.....comforting words usually hurt me more in this kind of situation......I would rather him tell me what I did wrong. But he was nice to me and I should have behaved better loll.

Congrats on your wins.  Next time more!!  U are right sometimes comforting is not....

It is different playing a tourney in person vs online.  More stressors.

btw     Okok. That confirms my guesses then  ??

Maybe they just had COVID and couldn't breathe normally happy.png
