He wil still play in 2 years if Ding wins
Magnus Carlsen gives away the title, what does this all mean?

My two guesses:
1) He's still going to pursue 2900 Elo (Classical).
2) If/when he reaches it, he'll announce his professional retirement from chess.
He is satisfied in your life now game is over
This statement could bring him back out of retirement just out of curiosity for what it meant.

ikr?

Magnus is not retiring. He's just not going to play in the world championship match, that's all. So, for the fans, that means he will be available to play in at least a couple more tournaments every world championship year.

Good for Carlsen, I think this is a mature decision.
"Historical reasons blah blah blah"
1000 years from now no one will remember his name. You only get to be alive a few years, so follow your heart.
i have just woken up to find a club post which i thought was a joke video, i watched it and it was no joke to which right now we have found out magnus carlsen has finally decided to leave his title behind for good. now i find it pretty sad in general for the community as in my opinion there is no meaning for the WCC title if magnus isn't #1 cause all the other players aren't as good or cant even compete with him anymore in all formats. granted, many can beat him one to one but that doesn't really change the fact that he has remained so consistent and hard working through all of this decade to the point where he gave up as it didn't feel special anymore.
1. Magnus has been the only 2800 consistently here throughout the decade
2. the only person to have all 3 chess titles in all 3 formats, blitz, classical, and rapid twice
3. the person who has broken the highest ratings in all platforms OTB
4. the mentality of being a world champion and having to face the same opponent is what i think personally gets to him as it just makes him wanna quit. he is feeling quite frustrated imo that "why do i have to play the same opponent after each candidates" with ian and he doesn't hate nepo at all but i think he just finds it "draining" working super hard, to win, and then just feel super stressed about the next WCC match in the next candidates cycle. this is the mentality of any former world champion, they all work so hard and are stressed with every match to retain
5. like i have said before, magnus is the one person above the rest, he has shown to be on a way more superior level, maintaining 2800, breaking new chess milestones and ultimately he has brought a new light to chess making many inspired and admired to be in the community.
again i am devastated as i think really even though i am happy for @chefshouse (i dont really care much about nepo winning the match as i rather have ding) winning the opportunity to clinch a chance at becoming #1 considering his past troubles and lack of resources, i just can't bring myself to say that "those guys" are better than magnus carlsen cause they havent proved that they can do it. they can be on the level, draw many games maybe win once or twice but really ding feels like the only person who can make him run which is why i am happy for ding as he is one of my favorite players and i have always been cheering for him so hope he beats nepo.
thanks for the nice times being a World champion magnus, we all still consider you the best
(2013-2022 and the reason is forfeiting for not feeling any value to winning the WCC anymore)
