Manners cost Nothing.

I don't think you can generalize it. If I am playing blitz, for example, I wont say hi to you because I'll be focused on playing (since time is short). Then after the game, I will probably say gg and close the window without waiting for a response. I don't really care if they respond or not because I didn't look for one

First of all your name is lily, that's enough reason for me not to talk to you. Second, SHUT UP.

Eh... nope, freedom of speech love, deal with it : ^ )

Have you considered changing your name to miserablesodknight? Think it may suit you better

Oh and Jesus loves Ya. Be blessed.

I don't know what pleasure people get from a meaningless "hi".  Whenever I say "hi" to my opponent, I'm thinking "hi, idiot".  Am I still being polite? Innocent

Yes, do you think I find everybody I come across sintilating? Give me a break!

To come back to the original point, "Manners Cost Nothing"

I rest my case...

Wear and tear on my keyboard/fingers.

Time I could be spending doing anything else.

Intimidation.  I don't want my opponent to relax and think I'm a friendly person, I want him to believe I'm a soulless machine and that my only reason for being here is to crush him into a pulp.

There ya go, 3 things I lose by saying "hi".  Tongue out

Listen, let's all come to a truce. I want to apologize to each and every person I "blanked" throughout my time here on chess.com. It wasn't you, it was me. It was an insensitivity to your feelings. I also want to apologize to the children for whom I am setting a wretched example. To you children: It's Ok to talk to people. Talk to everyone. Even when you don't want to talk to someone, or the conversation is literally saying nothing like "hey. hello. whats up. nothing. cool. etc...", still talk to them. Manners are cool. Stay in school.

Thank you.

And to the woman who singled me out, I would love for you to melt my icy heart.

It gets right up my nose when opponents blank me. Ok you may not be the coversationalist of the year, but a simple "Hello" would surffice. To say nothing is, in my opinion, down right rude!!!

Can I just ask, if you are a player who says absolutley nothing why you chose to do so? I understand if people don't want to talk but I believe it's manners to acknowledge the other persons exsistance.

Or am I missing something?

Man do i agree with you on this issue.  It absolutely amazes me how often i play here and the vact majority of my opponents NEVER say hi...hello...good luck...good game or acknolwdge my good luck and goosd game.  It makes me wonder how alot here were raised, or what it is youre so busy with that you dont have the time to type GG at the very least.

my son plays on this site.  he's 8.  i've instructed him to not use the message box, and ignore anything in it by going to the moves tab straight away.

remember "don't talk to strangers?"  here's a wake up call for you - you're strangers.

You might also want to teach your son manners and good sportsmanship.

A rule of thumb: Say hello when spoken to.  You are not obligated to initiate converstation when there are up to 100- 1000's of games going on at one time.

Generally, the games in here or timed so conversation eats away at your time.  That's one of the big differences between meeting someone on the street and playing a game of chess online.  However, if someone says hi, I'll say hi and if they want to continue talking I just say, 'Can't talk, gotta concentrate."

Sorry if i dont understand how typing good game, good luck, hi, hello, or something nice causes you to lose a game when you have anywhere from 1-10 days to make a move.

For me every now and again I plug in my wireless mouse and move a lil ways away from the keyboard

But I have the on-screen keyboard up just incase someone says something first :)

I should have been clearer.  I wasn't speaking for all games but in a 10, 5, or less blitz I have to keep conversation short, I need to concentrate.  I'll say Hi or gg, ty, nm because I'd like to meet others that enjoy chess.

Actually, one opponent of mine kept talking and being friendly I responded, enjoying the game/conversation until I realized I had less than a minute left and I lost on time.  I've played others who try to talk away their opponents time if down on material.

But I'll agree with the OP, general courtesty is always be appreciated.

I basically agree with you on the blitz.  Buts its still no excuse not to type good luck at the beginning and good game at the end.

why do people disable chat as soon as i say hello ?

why do people disable chat at all at the beginging when nothing has been said either way - i feel insulted.

i dont always converse - normaly for advice as i am a new to chess and only after i make one or two crucial mistakes.

i always loose and always say "good game" - i always reply to "hello" but dont always start by saying it.

age eight or not no one is to old for manners - exchange hello's then disable chat if he must.

firstly to liz, i agree it is rude not to at least say hi to you opponent before a game. we dont need to have big conversations but at least say hi and at the end thanks for playing or something like that.

secondly to the laughingknight, are you really that much of an idiot that you felt you needed to say those things. if you cant say anything nice then perhaps you shouldnt say anything at all, especially when you should be concentrating on actually playing a game and getting your crap rating a little better.

sorry chess.com

farrellyface

Your opponent is acknowledging you simply by the act of accepting your seek or sending one out to anyone who wants to play. When you think about it, its kind of pointless to say hi as soon as a game starts. I actually get annoyed when im playing a bunch of 1 minute games and some random opponent decides to wastes precious time saying hi and then wastes more time waiting for my response. Im like MOVE ALREADY OMFG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I KILL YOU!!!!!!!!!!....but you do have the option of taking chat funcion off lol so that helps when i remember it!

I agree; manners do cost nothing.  If people were in person at a chess club, one person would at least greet another and ask if that person wants to play a game.  Same thing here.  This is like a gigantic virtual chess club; it doesn't hurt for people to be at least courteous to one another.  Doesn't mean people have to be friends or talk throughout the game; just a polite, friendly greeting would be nice.

ColinHB

If people do not wish to chat then they should turn the chat off immediately, no insult - message received.

However , this is a social game, what could be nicer than touching base with someone in Iran , USA or Russia.

Manners are of course the policy of a gentleman - but there are some angry people out there. If they are angry with you try not be bite back. Rude and angry people usually hate themselves no you !
