What would you consider master level for a rapid and blitz chess.com rating? 2000?

llama47

Some titles are earned for dumb reasons, and some people got a title 50 years ago and aren't so good today.

So instead I'll answer what's ~2200 FIDE or ~2200 USCF.

And that's probably a minimum 2300-2400 on chess.com blitz for most players... of course it can vary a bit depending on how good you are at speed games.

You can have a look at various titled players here:

By looking at a few dozen you'll get a feel for it.

By the way, I'm not trying to disrespect very young or very old people who have a title.

It's just that if someone who only plays online wants to know how close they are to getting a title if they started playing OTB, then 2000 blitz or rapid (which is what the OP asked about) isn't going to be good enough. OTB is good practice, so you should play if you want, but with a 2000 rating maybe a more reasonable expectation is something like 1800... and again it depends on how good at speed chess you are. If you're playing with a bad connection and broken mouse that matters too wink.png

Cool, thanks. What do you think expert level would be, maybe 2000?

llama47

2100 maybe, for lower rated expert (2000 USCF).

And again, with the caveat that if you never play blitz, and you're bad at it, then maybe you're an expert who is 1900 blitz on chess.com. Who knows.

I know one 2100 USCF guy who plays a fair amount of blitz here who is 2300 blitz most of the time.

1900-2000 is about as low as you can get before you need to start rethinking your life.

Are you stupid? 99% of players are rated lower than that.

Depends on the concept of who you see as a master. To my mom, who is a novice player, I am a master. To my nephew, who knows thing all about chess, my mom is a master. To me, a friend who's approaching titled levels of ELO is a master. And to them, grandmasters are masters.

Someone explained this theory for explaining why anti-mask rallies were stupid. People whose profession it is to prevent the spreading of viruses know much more than the average doctor. The average doctor in their turn knows much more than the average adult. And adults will know more about it than their children. For either of these groups, whatever the next level says will likely be incomprehensible because there's such a big difference between the knowledge about the topic of both groups. And that's why anti-maskers (and anti-vaxxers for that matter) are protesting because, since they cannot follow what people who were educated for it are saying, they think they know better.

It's true for all groups really. I can try to explain to my mom the various patterns I see on the board and my mom will just nod. And I have no idea how grandmasters decide their moves. A lot of thinking, probably.

at least 2300 blitz, if you play frequently.

NaughtyBone12

I think more than 2500, and be an active player

I'd say around 2400 here would be the equivalent of 2200 FIDE, or Candidate Master strength.

That's why they are not master level.

At the upper end - ratings are inflating through the roof as more and more players enter the pool.

By the end of the year ... 100’s over 3000

Now there are 37 players > 3000

Not long ago there were but a handful.

However... the amounts for IM and FM include inactive players.

Rapid around 2300, blitz around 2400, but again, that's assuming you're as good at online rapid/blitz as you are at classical OTB. If you're someone like me, who has only ever played online and is just beginning to take up classical, expect your OTB rating to be a lot lower than that of your peers; in my case, my FIDE rating is only around 1900, so not even close to the 2200 that is required for the CM title. If you're 2000 blitz and have never played OTB, I would say 1700 FIDE would be a reasonable goal for you, but don't be disappointed if you don't quite perform at that level in your first few tournaments.
