Match Carlsen-Anand in trouble?

I read the news today, oh boy:

There is some uncertainty over Chennai as the venue for the eagerly-awaited World Chess Championship match between Viswanathan Anand and Magnus Carlsen after the World No 1 player from Norway expressed unhappiness with the FIDE's choice of venue.
It has been learnt Carlsen's team is apprehensive about playing in Chennai given unfamiliar food and weather condition as the Norwegian has no experience of competing in hot climate. The fallout could be Carlsen's refusal to sign the contract as both players are needed to sign the agreement despite FIDE's MoU with the TN state association.

New York would be a better choice or Montreal we have cold weather and so much snow in the winter were buried up to the knees.

Nevermind, I found one.

Anand could say he can't play in cold weather eating hotdogs...

"Chennai had lost out on the last World Championship match between Anand and Boris Gelfand after Moscow offered a higher prize fund of USD 2.55 million to the organisers.

At that time, the FIDE president, Kirsan Ilymzhinov had promised the Tamil Nadu government that the state will get the first preference for the next match.

It has also been learnt that the earlier preferred locations for hosting the match were New York, Miami, St Tropez, Paris and Tromso. The Norwegian town is already hosting the 2013 World Cup and the 2014 World Team Olympiad."

I still hope it's in India.

Tell that Carlsen to shut up,First he tells that he wont play candidates because Anand get's an unfair advantage, get's the format changed to Double Round Robin. Now he tells that he won't play in chennai. He should remember that he is not the world champion but Anand is,so it is only fair that Anand gets some privileges. If you cannot play in hot weather Carlsen,I suggest you remain a model and not a chess player.

No doubt Carlsen would prefer to play in Spitzbergen. Who does he think he is with all the complaints, anyway, Bobby Fischer?

This is just Ridiculous,As much as I like Carlsen and want him to win, this is truly ridiculous. The bid was indeed won By India and not Norway or some other colder place,so it is totally fair.

I can actually sympathize with Carlsen. I'd be very paranoid of having to subject my immune system to Indian food and insects. All it takes is one case of the shits and he's already at a huge disadvantage. I'd lobby for a more "neutral" place if I were him too.

India is not as bad as you think it is.Carlsen being the WC contender will obviously be treated very well and will only stay in the best of hotels and the insects arent a problem at all.The weather is the only thing he will have to adjust to but even that wont be much of a problem given how he will mostly stay only in the hotel.

WRONG.  There was NO bidding.  FIDE just awarded it to Chennai without bidding as required by their own rules.

Then what was it about FIDE beingpaid a huge sum by rhe CM of Tamil Nadu(The state where it is going to take place).

Likhit1

I had read that it was some kind of promise made during the Last WC.But anyways,I guess they'll be forced to have a bidding now.

So he should just shut up and be a good little drone and allow FIDE to break its own rules AGAIN, then?

I don't see evidence of anything improper yet.

Looks like a fun time for all! Unless Carlsen abandons the process...again.

Carlsen should just get on with it and play. I understand that he needs to feel comfortable but he'll no doubt get treatment worthy of a king. If Chennai has $22 million or whatever, I'm sure enough of it will be spent on Carlsen.

Formula 1 drivers travel all over the world from one week to the next, eat strange foods, adapt to widely differentiating climates and are still able to drive ridiculously complicated cars around race tracks at 200mph in searing heat for hours on end.

Is carlsen really serious about these issues? How about we host the match in New York instead then and make sure there is plenty of cotton wool to wrap him in.

So... what about when the Olympics were in Beijing? You get hot and humid summer temperatures well over 35 C. The local food is nothing like western food... I didn't read any stories of any athletes saying they might not take part in the Olympics because of this.

All Carlsen needs to do is sleep in five star hotel which will no doubt be provided, make sure he is served western food (i'm sure they can even hire a norweigian chef if they have $22 million to splash around) and sit in an air conditioned room while playing chess. Is it really too difficult?
