I think he's being criticized because one should be a little more respectful towards someone as important as Magnus Carlsen (though I don't think Maurice meant to offend him). I doubt that racism has anything to do with it. There's no evidence of that. Anyone else in the same situation would have received the same response.

Now I never saw the interview, and so whether it was simply a bad interview or racism, I couldn't tell you. I would hope it was a bad interview and not racism because I, for the longest time, have felt that all racists should be given the death penalty via being pinned to a wall and beaten up by whatever race they hate! You hate white people? Your death penalty is white people beat you up to death! You hate black people? Your death penalty is black people beat you up to death!

It's not so simplistic.
On the FIDE site, they still call him a GM. You can't become a GM under this rating, but if you're already one, you stay one if you lose a rating that you've already reached.
