in theory, you could be a 400 rated GM.

A GM Title can be achieved under certain circumstances with a 2400 rating, as Maurice Ashley did.

What are you implanting? That Maurice Ashley is not true GM and has never been over 2500 rating?

You need to get your facts in order.

Maurice Ashley achieved is final GM norm in 2000 with a rating of 2440. This is his current rating as he has not played since. A 2500 rating is not mandatory as I've explained. GM can be made at 2400, as many do.

Are you also a scholar? How many more of these fake GMs are there? Only 2500 rating will suffice to meet criteria of GM. That is FIDE law, who regulates this matter.

Lol this troll attempt is cute

There are lighter skinned and darker skinned people, but there are relatively few actual pure "white" or "black" or "Asian' , etc...people left in the world. For instance they randomly went into a Detroit barber shop with supposedly all "black" people and tested about 10 genetically and they averaged 30% "white" and could not find a person with less than 10% "white" and there were a few that were half or more "white". I think the question of race is only kept alive by racists because it is big business.....the head of the NAACP is 80% "white" and they asked him "what do you consider yourself>>>he answered "black of course".....gee I wonder why???? Maybe in a few more generations when the human race is so mixed up that none of us cares we can bury the distinction. It reminds me of Dr. Seuss "you can't teach a Sneetch".

Tall order.

This thread should be locked, & the op locked up.

Stupidity or pretend stupidity is common place here but using it to make incendiary posts should not be tolerated.

Captain_Fury

I don't see how race comes into this at all. BTW Ashley is NOT the only black GM as someone stated earlier.

General thoughts about the incident: Perhaps the question could have been stronger, but on the other hand, If Maurice's interview question got Magnus excited and caused him to say something beyond a canned, sterile, anodyne response, it wasn't a total failure as a question.

His job was to interview and commentate, not buddy around with the players. A good interviewer can't always be worrying about whether or not the interviewee likes them, or whether the interviewee will enjoy the questions.

I know. I reacted to this as well. There is also Bernard Parham (Parham Attack).

Very original way to troll. You would think chess players would be a bit more creative...

Most of what needs to be said on this topic seems to have been said.

Whatever the motives of the OP, the known trolls here have rated it 3/10, which says it all. It is for that reason that the moderators have seen no reason to step in.

It has been clearly established that Maurice Ashley earned his GM Title, and thus is  a very good Chess Player.

It seems to me that most people think that Ashley is to some degree controversial because of his manner.

Some like him.

Some do not.

I declare myself in the second category, to be  honest.

But, should he be sacked?

I say no.

I simply hope he learns what is acceptable, and perhaps he may even learn to do the job better in future.

I hope so.

Whether the thread should be locked, that depends on future posts, but I reiterate that both sides of the argument about his attitude have been heard, and that further discussion is unlikely to give any new angles.

Cheers!

There's post on the Chess drum blog with a lot of information on this topic. There were three as of 2010, according to the article, and I've got to think the number has gone up since then.

Wow I thought this was going to be a funny thread but it looks like people actually took it seriously after page 1...

BronsteinPawn

actually it is all a burocracy and an attempt to steal your money. You have to play international tournaments, play against people from different countries, give some love to the FIDE president, pray 10 times a day so they dont throw your card asking for the GM title to the trash etc...

Racism... possibly.

camter

Rasicm, it could be. That is what the title says.

Perhaps that says it all.

All from me on this topic.

No more.

Sarcasm? trolling? Nonsense. OP is being completely serious and I shall now berate him for being completely nonsensical, and while I'm at it I may as well throw just a tinge of my own political opinion into the rant.
