Memory Palaces

This form of memorization works very well for me.
I use it for chess openings, positional themes as well as other things I MUST memorize. I use the route method and use a "map" of about 20 square miles of familiar territory.
A good book about it is "A Sheep Falls out of a Tree"

Estragon,
Read this... its an example of a small route I used to learn/memorize basic ideas, themes and about chess. It's not limited to use for openings. I wrote this over a year ago and still remeber it and the embedded strategical ideas about chess word for word.
EDIT: Yes I know it is completely ridiculaous sounding that is part of the palace/route memory mechanism.
I woke up in my bed this morning to a small garden gnome making threats to me. I reviewed his threats and determined some of them were not real threats. There were consequences to him making the threats so I went into the shower to make sure I remembered the consequences. I looked at my bathroom counter and on it was my TO-DO List I grabbed a bar of soap than looked like a pen and wrote down what I wanted to accomplish on the TO-DO list. I always use it.
Then I made the decision to walk out to the kitchen, on the countertop, my dog Chuck had grown wings and was fighting a bald eagle wearing a monocle and swinging a claw full of large files, Chuck was flying diagonally gaining an advantage or reducing her opponent’s advantage with every move. On the floor by the backdoor was a safe with a king sitting on top of it. A square with a key on it stuck to the fridge began shaking and I opened the door to see a large quantity of locally superior peaches. They levitated from the fridge onto the couch and stacked themselves into a quality pyramid and the position of the peaches was so stable it was amazing. The role each peach played had to be considered as some were defending an attack by group of bad apples in the fireplace and others were attacking the apples, some both, but some peaches were just stuck inactive on the bottom of the pyramid of peaches. The mobility of the peaches on the couch was better than the apples because they had the high ground. There was a lot of advantageous space in the hallway to the office so I took the initiative and walked into the office and knocked over a skateboard with a nicely protected pawn unit on it. The Doorbell rang and a Tactical Russian submarine commander was at the door.
He said his name was Vladimir and asked me for a positional Evaluation of the Russian submarine fleet as they were in South Padre Island surfing for the summer. The ribbon on his jacket breast for collaboration was bright green with a small oak leaf inside it. Outside a pile of diamond material, with different piece values was in my neighbor’s driveway. At the bottom of the street was a politicians sign, for the center for flightless birds , we walked up to the mailbox and a priest and two bishops one black and one white, were standing next to a active Queen wearing a safety helmet that was dancing.
I walk back up to my driveway and in the bed of my truck two brothers attacking an opposing group of Chinese midgets wearing batman costumes and obstructing the midgets every move. The two brothers are allied, sustaining each other by standing back to back, and each one jumps in front of the other to protect him. But this also limit’s their attack against the Chinese midgets.
In my defense I get in my truck and move it, sustaining it, then run at the midgets with a counter attack, and shield the two brothers.

Sounds like something from Giordano Bruno (yep, the guy who was burned at the stake in 1600). In fact, he made his living out of his teaching his mnemonic methods during his many travels (and travails) throughout Europe.
Memory palaces is when you walk through a place in your head that is based on a place in real life and you associate the items that you want to memorise with landmarks that you see along the way.
For example, if I wanted to memorise a deck of cards, I would imagine myself walking through my house and seeing the first card on the T.V. as the T.V. is the first thing I see, and then the next two cards eating dinner on the dinner table and so on and so forth.
I was wondering if anyone has ever done this to memorise something, but instead of using a real place used a chess opening or a chess game that they know really well by associating items with moves. Personally, I haven't tried this. It's just a random thought that occured to me 5 minutes ago. I just wanted to know whether it has occured to anyone else and/or whether they have done this in the past or not.
P.S. Sorry if my explanation of a memory palace was bad. Just google it so that you can find out what it is.
