MEPHISTO, an old chess engine.

In the late 90's I had Mephisto on my PC 486. I feel some nostalgy and I was wondering if I could find it. I tried over internet but no success. Could you help me find it?

Try ebay, here is one http://www.ebay.com/itm/Ajedrez-Electronico-MeXs-Chess-Computer-Mephisto-Averiado-/351291228611?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_186&hash=item51ca96c1c3

Thanks, but that's not it. I'm looking for a computer program...

EscherehcsE

Was it the DOS program Mephisto Gideon?

If it's not that one, then I don't know what it could be, as the other Mephistos that I know about are all dedicated hardware.

I remember the old Mephisto programs for the early PC's, there was a green tinted picture of an Asian guy wearing a wizard hat on the box, it was Mephisto 1800, followed by later models Mephisto 2000, etc.

I never heard of those. Do you have any more information about them?

Another possibility, although it's a bit of a stretch, is Richard Lang's Genius 2.0 program (also for DOS). I have to confess to a bit of confusion over the name of this program. On Ed Schroeder's download page (the page above that I gave for downloading Mephisto Gideon), he lists the program as Chess Genius 2.0. However, at this download page, the name is listed as Mephisto Genius 2 - http://www.gambitchess.com/pub/progr.htm

Also, in a 1994 Computer Chess Reports magazine, the program is also called Mephisto Genius 2. Unfortunately, when you run the program, the word Mephisto never appears:

My mistake, it wasn't Mephisto, it was Sargon.

Thanks guys. I exactly remember design/graphic of this chess program and it wasn't what you suggested. This one was newer. A windows program, not DOS.

Pulpofeira

It wasn't this one wich did beat Karpov once?

MuhammadAreez10

Mephisto defeated Karpov? Wow! Didn't think it was that strong.

Sorry I didn't hit the target for you. Versions of Chess Genius after version 3 are made for Windows (32-bit Windows only, though), but these versions haven't yet been abandoned, and I've never seen the graphics for them. They may not be what you're remembering.

I hope you find your lost Mephisto!

Why not make a TV series? "Truman and the Quest for Mephisto!"

How i miss my Mephisto Milano chess set!

OK, I'm confused. All three Chess Genius programs at that link are DOS programs; You were sure it was a Windows program.  ???

TrumanB

I'm not sure anymore...maybe it was a DOS program but it had more advanced graphic than those above...

Or maybe this one that I found is not the one I played...

Maybe it would be easier to try to track down your old 486 PC? Laughing

Mission impossible. :D
