Yeah, it may even have a historical context but we were taught that it is correct to say Merry Christmas not "Happy".

So, 'merry' means 'bountiful' in that context. So, the idea seems to be to wish for 'prosperity' to each other till the end of winter because winter is a season of less resources in places where it snows.
