Mixing Wives or Girlfriends with Chess?

Sort:
Kernicterus

I was wondering...how many of the chess players on here try to bring chess into their home life and share it with their wife? Or try to play the game with a girlfriend? Who has tried to get their romantic partner addicted to chess? Or do you prefer they keep away?

Practicality

My wife always gets frustrated becuase we are in completely different leagues. I love teaching her but it upsets her too much that she can never beat me and she gives up.

Mixing wives with girlfriends might not be a good idea.... Surprised

My wife doesn't even know how the pieces move. I've offered to teach her but she doesn't seem particularly interested.

It probably wouldn't work well anyway. She grew up an only child, and never played games, and is the least competative person I know. I, on the other hand, love playing games, and hate to lose, so I would never, ever let her win, and she would eventually get irritated.

And mixing all that with chess simply does not work, either...

haha  watch out, there are some serious comedy headhunters around here who will fall all over themselves trying to force you to apologize for such comments.  how dare you say something funny that "degrades" women

my wife stays far away from my chess playing.

Fortunately nobody is suggesting such a thing.

I have taught the fundamentals of both chess and pool to many different girlfriends. As long as you don't tell them exactly what to do and just let them learn off basic instruction, most do very well. I was with one imparticular girl who after four years of playing whipped me at pool and occasionally beat me at chess. It is good to share your interests with your spouse, as long as you don't take sharing as forcing.

Interestingly, (to me at least) my boyfriend gets exasperated at chess much more easily than I do. I would probably hate it if I dated someone who continually slaughtered me in the game. Somewhat related, I'm a vegetarian and I've always dated carnivores...maybe there's something to that "opposites attract" theory.

I've offered to teach her how to play, but my wife has absolutely no interest in the game. She will play sports and other board games though, and has one heck of a competitive streak.

Since she (like my parents when I was younger) won't play me I will just keep mixing chess and computers when I want a game.

{EDITED} but I really like chess.  I have a really nice maplewood chess board and the pieces are really smooth and have all the right ridges.Innocent

My wife actually allowed me to show her how the chess pieces move and completed a game with me. She said it was fun. She hasn't played since and she won't sign up for this site. She and the kids think I'm crazy and I send too much time on this site. Chess has become my other woman.

My wife prefers this to me babbling about computer security all night. Chess totally wins the lesser-of-two-evils award.

...still doesn't mean she gets attention unless she's got food in her hand or she's wearing something skimpy.

Is there a name for that for that variation, I want to look it up in my FIDE encyclopaedia of chess openings?

AfafBouardi, my wife is a casual player, but at this point the games are so one-sided there's no point to playing together. We played our annual game a few days ago... she spent 3-5 minutes per move, I played instantly, mate in 16. :(

She actually went through all the Chessmaster tactics courses and some ChessKids tutorials, so she usually beats friends who rarely or never play.

I never mention it.  Chess carries such an unfair stigma.  Many people view chessplayers as geeky or pretentious, so I've found that it's usually a mistake to tell women I like to play.  I'm married now, so that's not a problem anymore.  My wife jokingly calls me "fancy" . lol.

 It's called the Dunkin' Dutchman.

Ferrbear, I hope you don't let your friends touch those pieces!!

I play with my boyfriend all the time, and I always lose, but still enjoy it. It's a great learning experience for me. Generally, I think if your partner has an interest, it's always a good idea to share you common hobbies.

Hopefully it would be something like this...
