Hello everyone! I wonder if there is a difference between starting the game with g6 or with d6. I want to reach this position if possible:

But I want to avoid this:

And also my coach said that its better to start with g6 than d6. Im not sure if there is a difference or if those 2 are always leading to the same position.

Why do you want to avoid the second position?

I've heard that 1. ... g6 may be a bit safer. The contrary used to be thought.

The correct move there is Nfd7 and I find this position unconvenient and sharp, but this is just a personal preference

If the position makes you uncomfortable then by all means, avoid it.

A player has only one real task in the opening: to reach a middle-game position in which they feel comfortable and confident. So if you don't feel confident in that sort of position, then sure, avoid it.

Maybe try thay c7-c6 line that I mentioned above.

This is the position I got from the opening today against the 1900

Sure. From there you can choose go in several different directions.

One option involves the b5 lines we've been looking at.

And one benefit of the c6-Pawn is that it gives you extra options (Nd5) in reply to e4-e5.

How do I deal with the queen exchange variation and an uncastled king?
