Money earnings not considered, which ability would you rather have?

I could probably learn all of the major languages in the world if I really wanted to. I already speak 2 at a native level, and I'm proficient in a third. But I could never become the best chess player even if I set my mind to it. So I'd definitely choose to become the best chess player.

I consider the top 100 of the 7,000 to be major.

If this ability includes being able to understand animals and computer speak on top of human then i take the language gift.

timbeau

Absolutely zero.

Chess for me, as I enjoy chess far more than I do people.

Conflagration_Planet

I'd take the languages.

Being able to speak all the major languages doesn't offer any serious benefits. Ok, you can travel more conveniently and get to understand people of different cultures somewhat better. That's it. Obviously, "be the greatest chess player in the world".

Yes, that succinctly sums up my thoughts about it as well.

FrenchTutor

But what if you were able to 5|"34|{ 1337?  Then would you pick the languages?

Not mine.

DrCheckevertim

If the options were between "best chess player" or able to speak "only" 10 languages, I would even pick the 10 languages...

I'd like to pose another question - greatest chess player vs greatest troll? Which one would you pick?

FrenchTutor

Greatest troll is already locked down by the WBC.

LeggomyEigo

why would you want to improve, Mr. Rogers loves you just the way you are neighbor

It sure would be nice to be able to read all the world's literature without somebody having to translate it for me.

Neither of those two are extremely appealing to me, but I would definitely choose the greatest chess player. There is, by definition, only one "greatest" chess player in the world. Being able to speak every language, although very rare, is definitely something that a number of people can do.

That is the stupidest thing I have ever heard.   There is nobody who can speak 50 at a native level let alone all of them.  I dont care what you read
PiggiesOn7

Speaking every language might get you laid more.  Being the world's greatest chess player most likely wouldn't.  So, I'd take the languages.

I'd take A) be the greatest chess player in a hot second. Google translate is good enough for muddling through the other languages.

I agree. I would take A)
