This is my first chess game that I played on chess.com . I've never played chess serious or anything before but I'm thinking about starting ;) This game went quite well but I want to know what I did wrong!  I know that  I suck, but I dont know how? Please tell me!

Sincerely Canus

2.Bd3 isn't the best.  Play 2.e5 and make him move the knight again.  Now 3.Bc4? is bad.  You are wasting a move and now you are taking the defender of the e-pawn away. 2...Nxe4 should have been played and Black is up a pawn.  Black should have played 4...Nxd5 to get his pawn back.  5.Bb5+ is better and you should be able to hold th extra pawn.  6.b4? loses another pawn.   Best may be 6.Nc3 or 6.Nf3.  Now 6...Nc6 is not good black should play 6...Nxb4.   7...Nd4 was better.  8.Be4 is better than 8.Bc4.  Now black should play 8...Nf4, threatening 9...Nxg2 and 9...Qd4 (treatening the bishop and the rook at a1). 10...Nxc6 was better so that black would have a better pawn formation. 13.Bb5+ or 13.a3 looks better. 14...dxc3? is wrong.  Best is 14...Bd6. Best is 15.Qxd8+ Kxd8 16.Nxf7+ winning the rook

you bishop looked like a yoyo moving around so much! just calmly develop your pieces - ALL of them!

read these articles:

I should actually read those articles Erik posted before making my post, but a few simple opening rules and principles are good to learn and remember.

1. Establish a central presence. Be it by pushing pawns to e4 and d4, or piece control with Nc3 and Nf3 (both pawn and piece control is usually ideal), get your pieces to positions where they are influencing the center.

2. Try not to move the same piece twice before most or all of your pieces are developed. This is talked about a lot in beginner's books, and the reason is it is very important. Many times we think we can do damage with one or two pieces developed, but if you are playing someone who knows what they are doing, they are going to out-develop you and run you over. Get your pieces to where they are controlling squares. A feel for harmonizing pieces will come with time.

This game was a good start for you. Congratulations. Keep pushing to practice those general principles and you will find your playing strength will grow rapidly.

Rules to remember when playing a chess game:

1. There is exception for every rule.
2. Always play for a win.
3. Ask yourself why they moved each move.
4. Record your games and go over them, especially the ones that you lost.
5. Develop your chess pieces quickly.
6. Control the center as fast as you can with pawns and minor pieces.
7. Assume your opponents move was their best move.
8. Try not to move the same piece twice or several times in a row.
9. Castle soon to protect your king and develop your rook.
10. Have a plan. Every move should have a purpose.
