Alright, so two weeks later im going to participate in my district lvl chess competition and this is my 2nd attempt to fight for the district champion trophy. (da 1st time was 2 years ago (the year i started to play chess))

ive done quite well in my training these days and prepared all openings that i might face during the competition, including my own favourite one. but 1 thing had haunt me for sooooo LONG since the last time i participate in the competition.

DO I NEED TO call CHECK when my opponent's King is in check ????

i know this question is quite ridiculous and unbeliveable, but thats the problem im facing cuz i nvr had an OTB competition experience, plus the district lvl competition is only among schools. in fact, the judges doesnt care much about it :-( (from my 1st time experience). so im afraid that a quarrel might happen if my opponent doesnt know anything about the rules (since 90% dont know how to take NOTATIONS !!!) and i want to prevent that.

sorry for my bad english.

even in OTB games ? Grandmasters also do that ?

S_Ong

thx

goldendog

No they don't.

En garde!

You don't need to say check, in-fact you shouldn't speak at all during the game(Estragon wrote the exceptions).

Although I know that in low level matches among non-professionals it's sometimes expected to say "check", but if so, it's a custom, not a rule.

S_Ong,

In my personal opinion, in Msian OTB chess tournaments its necessary to call out check to avoid dispute (especially when there is a time default function played during the tournament). You can always clarify this with the tournament arbiter before playing for confirmation.

yes ! and if you touch the piece....?

Natalia_Pogonina

No

 hey ref. he was mumbling...

zerobounds

if he moves a piece in check you can use the Schmidlap maneuver.

Pogonina, is it so that if someone makes an illegal move by accident, for example in blitz, like not getting the king out of check, he/she loses?

Saying check is a distraction and if you do it a lot the arbiter may make you forfiet the game.

That would be an overkill IMO, and it's also not in accordance with  spirit of the laws of chess, where there is a more appropriate penalty.

http://www.fide.com/component/handbook/?id=124&view=article

Announcing check can be considered an introducing a source of noise(or distracting) which is against Article 12.6.

Should you keep repeating it, then you "persistently refuse to comply with laws of chess",  only then you could/should lose a game according to Article 12.8.

Otherwise, penalty is described in Article 13.4. , and for calling check a proper penalty IMO(for first occurrence) would be a warning:

13.4

The arbiter can apply one or more of the following penalties:

  1. warning
  2. increasing the remaining time of the opponent
  3. reducing the remaining time of the offending player
  4. declaring the game to be lost
  5. reducing the points scored in the game by the offending party
  6. increasing the points scored in the game by the opponent to the maximum available for that game
  7. expulsion from the event.

I know I'm not Pogonina, but I'll answer it anyway, yes, that would be a case in blitz if there is "inadequate supervision":

Dragec,

good work with the Laws of Chess, as usual.

Falling asleep during blitz? see a doctor. Tongue out

End of discussion - at least as far as I'm concerned - Natalia Pogonina is a Women's GM, I presume she knows what she's talking about.

Per Dragec I've deleted some bogus references I found at another website

Thanks. Cool

I kinda like that legal stuff, and it's easy for me because I work with contracts every day.

Article 3.8b of the FIDE Laws of Chess indicates that "Declaring a check is not obligatory". USCF rule 12F states "Calling check is not mandatory".

Check your data, the 3.8.b FIDE laws of chess deals with castling, regulates when castling right is lost, or temporary prevented.

 I never play blitz,

* Ahem *

Perhaps you slept through them, in which case your fibbing heart is forgiven. Wink

I don't. Sometimes, they don't notice, and waste a bunch of time thinking of a move that isn't legal, then (if you are playing in tourney conditions) lose more time for the lllegal move.
