Neccessary to call CHECK ?

"Check" has fallen out of disfavor. More modern is "gotchya," and "I don't think so, buddy" (or "Je ne crois pas, garcon!" - another generally accepted french phrase in addition to j'adoube)

Pogonina, is it so that if someone makes an illegal move by accident, for example in blitz, like not getting the king out of check, he/she loses?

I know I'm not Pogonina, but I'll answer it anyway, yes, that would be a case in blitz if there is "inadequate supervision":

In a rated tourney type game, they lose time off their clock.

Dragec

You get 2 additional minutes(or win if its 3rd illegal move),FIDE laws of chess:

7.4

a.

If during a game it is found that an illegal move, including failing to meet the requirements of the promotion of a pawn or capturing the opponent’s king, has been completed, the position immediately before the irregularity shall be reinstated. If the position immediately before the irregularity cannot be determined the game shall continue from the last identifiable position prior to the irregularity. The clocks shall be adjusted according to Article 6.13. The Articles 4.3 and 4.6 apply to the move replacing the illegal move. The game shall then continue from this re-instated position.

b.

After the action taken under Article 7.4.a, for the first two illegal moves by a player the arbiter shall give two minutes extra time to his opponent in each instance; for a third illegal move by the same player, the arbiter shall declare the game lost by this player. However, the game is drawn if the position is such that the opponent cannot checkmate the player’s king by any possible series of legal moves.

Well, I saw yes, no, and maybe in these replies, so maybe it is not such a bad question after all. I wonder what the actual answer is?

FIDE says no. USCF says no, never declare check! I was at my school "chess club" and of course there was someone saying that if you don't declare check you lose your queen. "I read it in a book!" he says. Only low level players declare check.

Silfir

It is not necessary to announce check. The FIDE rules do not ask for it. Being unnecessary, it might be interpreted as disrupting. If you play in higher brackets, more of your opponents will know this, and get annoyed if you still do announce check. One part of accumulating experience is to pick up rule details like this. So if you know better, stop saying check. If someone gives you flak, ask them to show you where in the rules it is required for you to announce a check. If they use FIDE rules, they won't be able to do that.

wow ! im confused ! but thanks to pogonina i am confident to say check or not. since kevinong stated that in Malaysia OTB games normally ppl will call check, i think i need to call check as well. but im afraid if i choose not to the judges will disqualify me bcuz they didnt even know the rules bcuz LAST TIME I participate they SAID stalemate is a WIN not a DRAW ! LMAO !

Bottom line: You have to follow the rules in any tournament. When I train my students, I train them using the rules and guidelines that govern tournaments so they don't run into any problems down the road. Silence is a critical factor. Imagine you're playing a tournament with 600 other players and you're constantly hearing people yell CHECK! It can break one's concentration.

Musikamole

Nope.

In my first tournament game, vs. a 75 year old veteran who had been playing organized otb at least 3 decades, when he placed me in check he touched the top of my king.

It must've been a dead practice since that was the first and last time anyone ever did that in my experience.

As a you're in check warning, it wasn't bad. At least it doesn't disturb the opponent or nearby players with a spoken check.

It's been almost 40 years since that first game and I can't say that after hanging around the tournament scene in all that time that I'd heard anyone say check.

A testament to the worthlessness of the practice among non-beginners.

S_Ong

so what if i warned the opponent but bcuz of the tense in the game he missed, i warn him again and yet he still insist to move other moves, shall he be penalised ?

As echess has indicated any suspected illegal moves should be reported to the congress controller, who will then consider a decision.

To address the initial question, its not necessary to call check so the choice is yours.

My view would be that in a first otb tourney this would likely be at the social end of the chess scale and saying check may be considered good etiquette.

As you progress and in future tournaments play stronger opponents they may become irritated by use of the check word as it would already be obvious to them. If used at all by open grade players its usually limited to blitzing out moves up to a time control.

Hell yeah ! I just finished my first OTB game at 27 out of 40 participants and i didnt call any "check". instead, my opponent called CASTLE when he castles no matter queen side or king side... wakakaka !

hailelmo1

If i made 2 illegal moves one game in a tourny and 1 in another game, do i lose the tournament?

"The thirteen year-old Stuart Conquest, when meeting at the board with the famous grandmaster, in a position from the Catalan Opening gave a queen check on move five, and childishly announced: 'Check!' Miles' reaction followed immediately: 'Is it?' " (Sosonko's The realiable past, article about Tony Miles).

I usually say “CHECK, SUCKA”

Alright, so two weeks later im going to participate in my district lvl chess competition and this is my 2nd attempt to fight for the district champion trophy. (da 1st time was 2 years ago (the year i started to play chess))

ive done quite well in my training these days and prepared all openings that i might face during the competition, including my own favourite one. but 1 thing had haunt me for sooooo LONG since the last time i participate in the competition.

DO I NEED TO call CHECK when my opponent's King is in check ????

i know this question is quite ridiculous and unbeliveable, but thats the problem im facing cuz i nvr had an OTB competition experience, plus the district lvl competition is only among schools. in fact, the judges doesnt care much about it :-( (from my 1st time experience). so im afraid that a quarrel might happen if my opponent doesnt know anything about the rules (since 90% dont know how to take NOTATIONS !!!) and i want to prevent that.

sorry for my bad english.

In short, yes, it is mandatory, otherwise, technically, it does not count and your opponent can ignore it. Your moderators may not treat it that way, but that is what is supposed to happen.
