NEW CHESS MOVIE!!!!

Ah, Josh Waitzkin. He wasn't poor but Jeff Sarwer sure was. That was the real story worth making a movie about. It was an incredible story of a homeless boy & his sister winning actual world championships for their ages while living through such a sad existence. All these other BS stories are minor by comparison. He now is a successful poker player & real estate investor after being forced to give up chess after he won the world under 10 title & being on the run from the law for most their childhood. Yeah, that would make a very compelling story for a movie. True story.

What story would you write to promote chess through the movies, or do you think that chess isn't worth promoting in the movies?  What story could Hollywood do that would make you happy?

Here are some ideas:

The story of Mir Sultan Khan, an illiterate Indian servant who became the British chess champion in the 1930s and then disappeared into obscurity The story of the first chess tournament ever, which took place in Madrid in 1575 at King Philip II court. Ruy Lopez, Paolo Boi and Leonardo di Bona participated, and Boi was allegedly poisoned later in life The Spassky - Fischer match Euwe, Keres and Alekhine in World War II Maurice Ashley becoming a GM Chess players and the Enigma machine Baron von Kempelen's Turk

It's not that there is a shortage of good chess topics that can be turned into Hollywood productions. "The Queen of Katwe" is going to be yet another "get out of the ghetto thanks to chess" movie, and it's getting tiresome.

Agreed.  This isn't even a chess movie...you could pull out every chess reference and replace each one with Hungry Hungry Hippos and the plot and script would be barely changed.  The trailer would be more exciting, though.

Hollywood needs to stop making the same movies over and over and do stories they have not touched yet...plenty of chess history that is interesting enough to use in a movie.  How about a period piece in the "Master and Commander" type of mold that outlines some actual events?

dashkee94

You could say the same with Searching for Bobby Fischer.  It wasn't about chess, it was about a gifted youngster--it could have been about tennis, math, dancing, etc., and been the same movie.  But the reason that Hollywood keeps making those other movies over and over is because they make money.  And they will keep making these movies until they no longer make money.  Those who invest in the movie expect to make a return on their investment.  Chess has never been a profitable topic for movies, and no invester will put his money into something that is almost guarenteed to be a flop.  If the general public would support chess movies, more would be made; no support, no movies.  And if chess players don't support chess movies, a studio would be insane to produce a chess movie.  You get what you pay for, and Hollywood pays close attention to what you pay for.

looks promising! I'm so glad a chess film's being made after David Fincher guy bailed out on the Bobby Fischer biopic for that Dragon Tattoo remake. I still want to see a Bobby Fischer film but this trailer looks great!

Here is what imdb says about the Bobby Fisher biopic "Pawn Sacrifice."

I'm definately seeing that! I can't believe they got Toby Mcguire (Spider Man) to play Bobby Fischer. Liev Scheiber (played Damiens father in the remake of The Omen) playing Boris Spassky makes sense though.

That is a fascinating interview (the one on USCF website). I particularly like his comparisons between chess and poker.

Hollywood and the public don't even know what they like until someone with imagination shows them ;).  See:  Lord of the Rings.

dashkee94

Yes, but Lord of the Rings was based on a sucessful and popular book.  You'll never see Zurich '53 done as movie.

And Tobey Mcguire as Fischer?  Are you kidding?  This is Hollywood's idea of fact, like Errol Flynn in They Died With Their Boots On.

I couldn't get the youtube videos to load on here but it's titled Jeff Sarwer: A lost prodigy, part 1 & part 2. Bruce Pandlefini said Jeff was the most gifted player he had ever seen while he was Waitzkins teacher. Sarwers dad didn't want Jeff to have training. Jeff had nothing, no coach, no home, an unstable life, & Jeff was a year & a half younger than Waitzkin but was 1 win & 1 draw vs him (only played twice) in serious tournament play. & he won the WORLD UNDER 10 TITLE. All that wasn't in the movie. Waitzkin wasn't anywhere close to being as talented as Sarwer but a movie was made about him. Sarwer was who the movie should've been made about. Talk about real life hard knocks. If anyone wants to see how he's doing now he's been on tv a lot from poker tournaments & the footage is on youtube. You'll see him all over the world in poker tournaments when you type in "jeff sarwer: a lost prodigy, part 1"

MrDamonSmith

Does anyone have a link to watch Bobby Fischer Against The World for free? I keep finding sites where I gotta create an account or go through stuff thats harder than having one leg in a butt kicking contest. I tried old trusty youtube but only found trailers.

dashkee94

Jeff did not have the private PR and connections that Josh had through his father.  Someone had to be the antagonist and Jeff got the short end.  I agree that the more compelling story would be about Jeff, but for a chess movie, the protagonist has to quit chess in order to succeed in life.  A damn good personal trial/triumph story, this would be an anti-chess story.  A movie on the Polgar sisters would be better.

That's because Josh's father is the one who wrote the book, the movie was based on.

Conflagration_Planet

Never saw the movie.

Nope.  Nobody would see a film about three Hun chicks.

Judit by herself looks better than Josh or Jeff.

I paid $3 to rent it on Amazon. Close to free, and legal

Matt daemon could make a good Fischer. Ben Afflick too except he doesn't know to act. Toby is just a terrible choice.
