Thanks everyone, I'm glad you enjoy it. I have (as some of you may have seen), I have removed the opacity from the background and changed the color of the dark squares. My next move is to add a progress bar and to add some more problems/shuffle the order dynamically so that the test is less likely to be the same twice in a row.
Okay - I have gotten to thinking the last 2 days. Since many people have raised the point that it is very difficult to estimate Elo based on tactical play, would it be a good idea for me to turn this software into a different kind of test? Kind of like the tactics trainer here, only it would be a test you take not a running score, then I can come up with my own scoring algorithm and the results would be their own metric instead of an Elo estimation, what do you guys think?
I wanted to check out the changes but never intended to retake the test so what I did was have quick look at the changes on the first diagram then quickly just played a random move on each board to see if anything was changed later (which it wasn't) and when I got to the end it told me my elo was 1754. I literally just played the first capture and/or sacrifice that I saw on each problem, with no intention of even checking my score. Just thought I would post it as I found it rather funny - FYI I don't remember what moves I played first time around and I never even looked at the posted solutions, this was literally me just playing the first move that I saw.
yep :) do all those moves rly fast and my software just might tell you you're a gm!
I moved within a few seconds on each and got 2575.
I got 2576!
When I took it the first time it gave me a rating of 17XX :p I guess I took too long on some of them. Some of them I saw the idea quickly but calculated trying to find the best moves.
I agree it would help to know there's a time limit and let the user know how many positions they're going to face. That way they don't get frustrated and start guessing or something.
hahaha, towards the end thats basically what i was doing.
sorry, but I do think they are definitley overestimated (mine at least) I got 1404, even though my live standard is in the high 900s
