Pawn Sacrifice is the name of the movie.Toby Maguire who  has played Spiderman in several movies will play Bobby Fischer. The movie is set to start filming this Fall.I hope it is out by next newyear. This is the Big time hollywood film a lot of Fischer fans have been waiting for. From what i can tell it starts in his childhood up thru his 1972 world championship victory.

I knew those mad chess skills must have come from a radioactive spider.

Hope they give it the Hollywood make over, loads of chicks, hard bodied dudes, guns and explosions.

Essentially it should be like Transporter except with chess.

either they could do the real thing, or something crazy but awesome like you said.. but they wont. they have a large % chance of screwing up and a lot of Fischer fans are cringing.. if they actually listen to GMs it might work, but they always have their vision of how the story could have gone.

just look at the movie searching for bobby fischer. they screwed jeff sarwer big time

Fischer was more the ladies man .women were always after him.An after his rematch 1992 he made up for lost time from rumors i have looked into.

Silman has worked on movie sets giving them chess advice in the past. I wonder if he'll have anything to do with this or knows anyone that is involved.

not sure if he would want to, he worked hard and did great for the harry potter movie but then got his combo screwed by the movie makers

So it was Harry Potter he worked on. I'm surprised that they went to such lengths as to get a professional in, all they had to do was make it look cool, move the pieces correctly and set the board up right.

Was the end result any good?

'not sure if he would want to'

I'm sure if they offered a certain amount of doe rae me, he'd do it. Easy money I reckon, although maybe it's hard work.........na, doubt it :)

yeah, just because chess players of all ratings hate when movies set up the pieces wrong, I think any pro would help out for the easy cash.

heres the problem silman worked hard on

jesterville

"They're all weak, all women. They're stupid compared to men.
They shouldn't play chess, you know. They're like beginners. They lose every single game against a man.
There isn't a woman player in the world I can't give knight-odds to and still beat."
Robert James Fischer, 1962, Harper's Magazine

Fischer was a brilliant chess player, but he was also an idiot, and had little regard for women, I hope the real Fischer is displayed, and not the American crap that Hollywood wants everyone to believe.

I cant wait!

It's no more likely to do that than making us all look like world champions. And that's not very likely. Smile

I see that Silman seemed fairly stoical about the slashed chess scene from Harry Potter. I imagine his pay was not dependent on how much was left in the movie. Wink

I fear the Hollywood version will concentrate on the man's obsessive/compulsive personality, and the descent into near madness after he achieved his life's goal.

A lot of that material is not going to present a pleasant image of either Bobby or chessplayers in general.  From his match with Reshevsky to relations with US organizers and USCF, to walking out of the Sousse 1967 Interzonal, Ed Edmondson's devoting USCF's full resources to making sure he got in and stayed in the next cycle, nearly refusing to go to Iceland, walking out once he got there, the technical statistical arguments over his demands for match conditions to defend the crown, his involvement with the fringe group the Worldwide Church of God, "I Was Tortured in the Pasadena Jail," the anti-Semitic and anti-American tirades, spitting on the State Dept. telegram at his 1992 rematch with Spassky in Yugoslavia and the crazy press conferences there, his arrest in Japan, marriage, and negotiations for asylum in Iceland . . .

It's not going to be hard to make us all look like weirdo freaks.

This is the most likely scenario.  Remember the Johnny Cash film from a few years back?  It made Cash look like a nut-case, and that was Johnny Cash!  Imagine what they'll do with a fella' who actually did have a screw or two lose!

Conflagration_Planet

I hope that movie turns out to be more accurate about Fischer"s life than "A Beautiful Mind"  was about John Nashes. I saw the movie, then read the book, and the real John Nash was NOTHING like the movie Nash, other than being a math genius.

We are not Bobby Fischer.

They can do the factual movie for chess players and have a few thousand audience or they can fabricate a Fischer and have a few million or they can compromise and nobody will watch it.  I think a movie, like Springtime for Hitler, might be more appropriate.
