I heard it was some guy in the Phillipines/Indonesia I forget, with an engine. But yeah Short was apparently convinced. Wasn't he getting trolled with 1.f6 and stuff.
Nigel Short vs Bobby Fischer

The most decisive "proof" came when Short asked his opponent if he knew of Armando Acevedo, an obscure Mexican player.
The immediate reply was: "Siegen 1970." Fischer had played Acevedo at the Siegen Chess Olympiad in 1970.
"The guy was obviously trying to tell me something," Short told the paper.

I read that as well. I don't remember the question Short asked the player that made him certain it was Fischer, but I remember thinking plenty of people could've answered it. But Fischer died in 2008, years after internet chess was established, surely he must've at least tried playing online.

Fisher also said, "What is going on is I am being persecuted night and day by the Jews, for telling it like it is. They want to put me in jail, they're robbing me of everything I have, they're continuously lying about me. I've had enough of this shit. The latest thing they've done is I had some stuff in storage back in Pasadena for 12 years, spent a fortune on storage fees, a fortune on safes... and these God-damn Jews in America have just gone and grabbed it all." I wouldn't put too much faith in anything he said.

Ok, this is ridiculous! I watched game seven of this series. The supposed Fischer plays Whites pieces, opens f4 and follows e4- Qe2-Qf3-Qf2-Qg2 fianchettoing the Queen. I am starting to believe that neither Nihel Short ever participated in this show! Someone shorted a nice video and through it to Yourube to have some fun!
End of fairytale story.

He complained about how deadly modern opening theory is. Maybe he knew he could run circles around Nigel and proved it just for kicks.

For gods sake edit the topic if possible. I was shocked that someone is even comparing bobby Fischer with Nigel short!!
Well... Nigel Short was at one time the #4 player in the world.

Back when they were both young, both of them were bright and rising stars.
And when they got older, both of them became grumpy and bitter.
They got more in common than you seem to think

Anyone see Short get destroyed by Kasparov last year in that legends battle?
I did, but I don't remember Kasparov playing chess like a smack. Perhaps Fischer invented 960 but he never said move your Queen in the opening four times and then fianchetto your Queen on g2. Fischer in he's career had a very narrow opening repertoire and he trusted he's preparation.
Kasparov quited chess in 2004 and last year played blitz in St.Luis depended on he's preparation in the early 90's! on the Scotch opening!
Chess players like Kasparov and Fischer play chess mostly to win!! They can't play random chess even for fun.
Anyone see Short get destroyed by Kasparov last year in that legends battle?
To this day, I'm wondering why there was a plural to "legend"...
Short got murdered in that one. And that with Kasparov being retired for 10 years and Short being an active top 100 player back then.

Did it really happen?
At the time, 2000-2001 were there engines available to the public that could crush Nigel like that? Or was it really Bobby?
