NM Spencer Finegold mocks GM Igor Kurnosov death

Sort:

Igor Kurnosov was a GM who was tragically knocked down at the age of 28 and killed by a car. Spencer very nonchalantly tells his viewers this and then feels the need to elaborate and say the guy who killed him hit someone else with the car. And jokes he must have been on a “spree” that day. He then jests that “probably Kurnosov was higher rated than the other guy that he hit”.

If that wasn’t enough, he then goes on to joke to his viewers that,

”he died in 2013 so you can probably improve on his opening play because engines are stronger now”

I don’t know if Spencer is just nervous doing lectures or trying too hard to be funny but I found the opening comments of this video to be in extremely bad taste.

To put a face to name. That’s the young man whose death you are mocking Spencer. Shame on you.

I like my comedy like I like my coffee. Edgy and black.

very sad, but chess like everything around us, have some idiots that mock about everything. That said, we expect chess players to have higher morale and sportmanship because it is an intelectual sport. Not seems to be the case...

TakeThisPawn

Yes. Especially when using the guys games for his video. I commented on the video asking Karen and Ben to remove it out of respect for Igor’s family.

Imagine a relative searching his name on YouTube and coming across a guy with a pink unkept Afro and purple beard mocking his demise. There is a time and a place for jokes. As his father would say - “terrible”

FonsecaSF

please tell me that you have smarter journalists than this... really don't know what to call her, besides have pity of her...

deep and true. some people nowadays have pride in having no respect for nothing. best to do is not give them any attention, because they not deserve better. this lack of basic morale is a illness of modern world.

I think NM Spencer is perhaps going through what most teens do. The rebellious stage. Angry at his parents. I think the hair dying is a scream for attention. Hopefully he will mature as he enters his twenties.

Attempt to manufacture outrage. Check.

Virtue signalling. Check.

Shaking another man's jolt*. Check.

Zzzzzz. Check.

*This is an old-timey expression meaning 'to meddle in another man's business'. I came across it in Nelson Algren's A Walk on the Wild Side.

If you watch the video, you see that the presenter has a lot of positive things to say about the dead guy. Not mentioned in the OP's one-sided account.

You should read less Nelson and more Nimzowitsch and your rating might improve.

I don’t care about the rest of the video. He made unnecessary jokes about a player who achiever more than him. Imagine you’re his Mother and search your son on YouTube to come across a guy laughing that we know more opening theory than him now because he died at 28 six years ago.

Hahahhahaha. Really funny joke. Not!

That's not an excuse.

If you want to be outraged by something, be outraged by the real evils being perpetrated in the world.

Pulpofeira

This guy is a teen? Looks like my father with a clown wig.

Really? My chess rating? That's what you've got? If I had to choose between literature and chess, I'd...well, I don't know which I would choose. Probably lit.

And are you really objecting to the video on the odd chance that maybe just maybe the dead guy's mother might see it one day? There are a million better uses of your time. There are lots of real evils out there you can crusade against, if that's your thing.

Well said!  There's a reason antisocial and inappropriate losers were ostracized all throughout human history!  Such events bring shame to chess and chess players.

Sure you're not outraged? You sound a bit outraged.

Other way around,  not interested.

Well, if you're not outraged (despite sounding distinctly outraged), that's great! Because lack of outrage is what I am advocating.

I've been looking for a way to be offended about something, anything, all day today!  I just read through this thread, and I still haven't found it.

Am I allowed to say I’m offended by your profile? No offence Steve but it reads like a tinder profile.

”I’m a chemical engineer” “ I have 2 mastiffs and a french bulldog”??????

Why would you ever include that in your profile on a chess site?

“He has 2 mastiffs so that rules out e5. We know how tactically sharp their owners are...and can’t play the French either because of the bulldog. Sicilian it is!”
