I am having the same problem. Have tried rated and unrated. Friend shows as online but will not allow us to play a live game together. What gives?
Also having this problem. Using whatever is the latest version of the app (downloaded about a week ago) on a Galazxy S4. Is this resolved for anyone?

Same problem. It seems to be an android thing, because my friends with iPhone don't have this problem. Very annoying.
I have a tedious work-around though: you can start a new game on the website and then continue it in the app.
I have the same problem and have tried iPhone - iPhone and Mac - iPhone.
I think its because they are online but not on the live chess page.
I know I'm late to this thread, but I had the same problem and googled it. egoole is correct. Your opponent has to be on the live chess page. That solved the problem instantly for me.
What exactly does that mean? "Opponent has to be logged in on the live chess page".
Same issue on my end. Would be nice to have this fixed.

Same problem stating the player is currently not available for playing live games Can anyone please help me out with this.
I found a workaround - both players need to have the "New Game > Play a Friend" screen open. This is the screen that shows the list of online players available for challenging.
This is obviously not ideal, but should work in the meantime until a fix is released.
MY MAIN PROBLEM OLD N SLOW. CHESSCOM ONLINE PROBLEMS WILL GET FIXED EVENTUALLY PRAY BEFORE I DIE. THERES A BUNCH. JGBU
3 years later and this is still a pain to do over the app.
I will be playing chess games in the app. My friend will beonline but still there is a problem stating the player is currently not available for playing live games Can anyone please help me out with this.
