Novag Citrine Problems

I wasn't sure who had this, and who had problems with this computer.  It may be me, but I think that it is the machine.

About 15 minutes into a game, the computer crashes and wants me to reset the board back to the original setup for a new game.  This is very frustrating.  If anyone can shed some light on this that would be great.  Thanks!

How long have you had the machine?  I understand that there were some problems with the early machines.

I actually just bought this machine from a user on eBay who got it in November so it's still underwarranty.  I'm currently working with www.chessua.com and novag to get this unit replaced or to exchange for a Novag Obsidian and some other stuff like books and such to cover the price.  Hopefully I hear back from them.  If not, we are going to go through FedEx and start a claim to get our money back.

I got mine in November but I have hardly used it and now that I have found Chess.com I probably won't again much as I prefer playing against a human.  I that time I saw an article (I think it was on this site) detailing problems with the machine.  The article implied that Novag were selling repaired machines as 'new' in the UK.  I will try and find the article for you.

I have actually read that before. Thanks for the info though!

Rabid...since you have one maybe you might be able to help me.  Is there a way to set the LCD up to only display time and not the thinking of the computer?

I checked my machine and found that I don't have an instruction manual!  I'll have a fiddle with it over weekend.

I had problems with my Citrine, too. Often, it would lock up during a game, with 2 lights at the top of the A7 square. I opened the box and inspected the circuit boards, and I saw a 1 inch land repair, along with multiple visible cold, or nearly cold, solder joints. I bought this new from chessusa.com, and didn't think about opening up the unit until after the warranty expired. I almost forgot to mention that there were solder splashes all over the chess board circuitry. I cleaned out some of the more obvious splashes and straightened out the ribbon cables and now it's been working fine. I hope this is helpful to other Citrine owners and those thinking of buying one.

I bought a Citrine recently on Ebay. I'm trying to connect to my PC via Arena & SCID. In Arena when I turn on the Citrine Arena returns this message  "Device ready: COM3" but will not respond to commands like I for information and does not move the pieces on the board. The Citrine came with only  the LCD readout. I made pieces and hooked up a power supply. I'm a electronics tech so I know how to match the power supply to the device. I also bought a USB to rj12 cable. I think that is the problem so I've ordered some other options for that. The cable I have is a FTDI device. One possible issue I am wondering about it the com rate. I've seen 57600 and 576000. Arena defaults for the Citrine is 576000. The com port created by my cable in device manager does not have a 576000 setting. Any advice would be welcomed.

I'm up and running. I love interfacing with the Novag in stead of a screen. Here is a document I created. It covers what I had to do to get my citrine working. https://docs.google.com/document/d/19VcZzkOTCGGVKS0WluY-uWV1bW7Y3TEWux0xMVvGVeI/edit?usp=sharing

Hi

I have an issue with my Novag Citrine Chess Computer in that it often gives an Error message UEr  (space) d8 or VEr  (space) d8 with the black bar and Queen symbol on the LED when I am playing a game and does allow me to by pass it.

The menu button does not work when this happens.

Anyone able to help please
