OBSESSION?

Guys, I think im obssessed with chess and not in the good way! I've been having dream about chess where I'm just constantly playing chess until I wake up and its stressful, like I'm actually thinking in my sleep. It's been happening for two nights! When I'm awake I play chess in my free time or think about chess. I think my brain is gonna pull a Marcel Duchamp... has this happened to anyone else? Should I be worried? SOMEONE TELL ME I'M NOT ALONE

Perhaps you are experiencing "lucid dreams" (not lurid dreams).  Look it up.

I had a half-asleep-in-the-middle-of-the-night dream recently about chess. It actually made sense, too. I do not remember the position or anything like that, but I remember analysing whether or not a tactic would work or not. It did, and I was happy. Then I realized I was half-dreaming, and I don't remember anything else until I woke up.

yeah, it happened to me during my childhood days. U need not worry because everything cools down with time. you can also hope some good results out of it because this is the time u will be forced to improve if u follow ur obsession(assuming that u like chess and would like to improve)

By the way, you should probably go to sleep soon (I'm about to do that very thing myself). Staying up late on chess.com might be part of the problem.

Okay...thanks, that makes me feel a little crazy :)

I sometimes dream of playing with a 100 year old Staunton set against an opponent whose face I cannot see. The problem is the set is burning so the longer you take to move the less chance you have of moving major pieces. My Queen always turns to ash at a critical point in the game and as she does a large Baiji dolphin appears and starts laughing. Oddly enough I have a 12 gauge shotgun with me but the trigger is made of jelly so I can't shoot the dolphin. My unknown opponent uses this time extinguish his King.An argument ensues , the arbiter is an ancient looking Eskimo , that is really in his twenties. He offers fish to the dolphin who keeps laughing but does not resolve the problem. Then suddenly I am in the HU-Wang temple in the Yunnan Provence of China and there is a guy that keeps ringing a bell to the screams of Yoko Ono.

Then I wake up screaming too.

Sometimes Marlon Brando is in the temple just saying ' the horror, the horror' over and over again.

Suddenly I don't feel so bad...you're in deep, bro. What do you think about before you go to sleep? XD

In my dreams It starts with a shotgun, a decoy and a whistle that makes quacking noises I wake up happy.

So...I guess that means you don't dream about chess?

The Tetris effect (also known as Tetris Syndrome) occurs when people devote so much time and attention to an activity that it begins to pattern their thoughts, mental images, and dreams

It has happened with dreams but more frequently I see it "interfere" with my thoughts. I find myself feeling like I'm calculating moves when I have thoughts that require a bit of planning.

I so used to get this tetris effect when I used to play tetris a lot!!  I didn't realise it was a thing, thought it was just me.  I started seeing even people as shapes with perhaps square heads and triangle noses.....  But yeah when I took up chess a few months ago to start with I would dream about positions and wake up in the morning in a cold sweat suddenly thinking I had made a mistake, I would start thinking of different moves in the middle of work (even when I was talking to people)....  Luckily 5 months on that has all stopped.  I think it's just a sign your brain is rewiring (firing off loads of new connections).  It'll probably settle down.

A lot of people wake up screaming with the image of Yoko Ono malingering in their ids.
