I’ve recently got some old chess books but it seems to be written in old fashioned notation is there anything on here that I can look at to learn it?

You mean descriptive notation. Their was a thread about this some four days ago on this forum , unfortunately I’ve forgotten the title of it , but it shouldn’t be hard to find, if you want to.

You probably mean https://www.chess.com/forum/view/general/anyone-miss-descriptive-notation

The notation itself should be explained sufficiently on Wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Descriptive_notation

P = Pawn

K = King

Q = Queen

B = Bishop

N = Knight

R = Rook

P-K4 would be Kings Pawn goes to the 4th square, or e4.

N-KB3 would be Kings knight moves to KB3, or f3.

Don't forget that in descriptive notation, each move is described from that players perspective....

So 1. e4 e5   becomes....

1. PK4 PK4

Note that both players have moved their pawn to their own 4th square.
