Does anyone have any information on folks who started chess late in life and became IM through tournament play (as opposed to say a chess puzzle composer or other "awarded" title)? I'd be curious to find the oldest such person.

Not to be a gadfly but titles for puzzle composition are only "awarded" if a person meets certain criteria! ;)
I'm not a composer myself but if I was a GM at chess, solving and composing I would prize the composing title the most and the chess title the least. :)
