During the pandemic it is easier said than done. Also not everyone has a lot of opportunity to play OTB chess even in normal times.
Although I do prefer OTB myself, online is certainly not as bad as the OP suggests.
Agreed, there are just way to many bots. Some of them a bit clever not showing they are machines, some others clear bot. One day I faced a bot that was just too fake. I reported that and said I won’t play until chess.com ban that. That bot was an insult to us, it was just a chess bot.
Eventually chess.com admins locked that bot (it was playing in live events), but they didn’t refund my lost rating points. What was they excuse? They said they didn’t ban it because of fair play policy, they banned it because that user shouldn’t have made any account! It is funny, this is a systematic abuse of users of the site. They make contract with several bot/AI companies to test the bots in live situation. Even the chat is not necessarily a human chat, it could be a bot. Everything is fake.

It’s a lot more convenient for me to play online. There are a lot of resources here to improve and finding games is easier. Especially since no one around me plays chess besides for a few people.

I played my first ever online game a couple of months ago after missing playing OTB.
I now think that I was missing out on a great resource and have already played way more games online than off - I still can't wait for OTB chess to return though, it is a far more enjoyable experience.
Here is going on yet.

Don't play bots. Play with the same time controls you would use otb. The analysis feature here is helpful for seeing where you and your opponent went wrong (or right).
