Online versus Live ratings

Does anyone else find their online rating (and overall play) to be higher on the turn based online games versus the live games?

Ratings are not absolute (like the temperature that water boils at sea level), they are relative and different ratings reflect different groups of people.  For that reason, you should not expect different chess.com ratings to precisely match. Neither should you expect any of these standard ratings to match your USCF slow chess ratings (or whatever other ratings you have.)

That said, there should be some correlation and you may have noticed the recent adjustment in live standard ratings. The mismatch is probably not as large as it was previously.

chess.com ratings are the only ratings I have.

I appreciate your help.

Maybe it is because I have more time to analysis my positions.  Right now I have about 70 active games, and the length of time I can analyze my moves helps.

Right now I am 1350ish (and climbing) on online, and I recently dropped below 1300 on standard.

Also, I can play with (and beat) 1500 level players on the turn based matches......I don't think I have beaten a 1400 level player on the live matches.

Chess.com ratings are useless and mean nothing.  If you truly want to know how good you are, play in over the board events.

Problems with Chess.com Ratings:

  1. You get players like me that use chess.com to experiment with lines.  Over the board, I play my bread and butter.
  2. Connectivity issues, especially with blitz.
  3. Utter BS play in blitz, like K+R and 21 seconds vs K+R and 14 seconds.  USCF or FIDE, you either have a Delay, Increment, or Insufficient Losing Chances.  Here, your opponent will act like a retarded reject and simply move his rook around for no reason but to run you out of time.  Such activity says ZERO about your chess skill.
  4. Cheating in Correspondence Chess - Correspondence Ratings are inflated by those that cheat (i.e. Correspondence Rating of 2284, Over the Board Rating of 1743) or deflated by those that don't because of their cheating opponents (i.e. Correspondence Rating of 2013, Over the Board rating of 2160).

I really just like having fun.

How does one "cheat"?

By using engine assistance. This is unfortunately fairly common on chess.com

So people have a computer program tell them how to move?

yes

There's a huge difference in my online vs live ratings, as you can see.  Part of this is that I haven't played many live games, and the time aspect is still stressful to me.  Add to that the fact that the majority have been at pretty short times (compared to what I'm used to), and I've become overly-dependent on the analysis board for online games, so my vision isn't very good.

With my online games, I'll sometimes spend an hour or more (sometimes over several days) on the analysis board for one move.  This means I don't make near as many blunders as in live games.  Like someone before mentioned, some other people don't take online games seriously; for example, I recently beat a Candidate Master two games in a row.  That might sound like an accomplishment, but he's currently playing well over 200 online games.  I'm sure I spend at least 20 times as much time analysing each move.  He may go through his games each day and move with a blitz mentality for all I know.  That type of thing boosts others' ratings as well.

Interesting.

I enjoy chess.com

I have fun learning on this site and meeting people from all over the world.

The ratings are fun, but not worth cheating over.

Differences in OTB and correspondence doesn't necessarily indicate cheating (which your use of "i.e." implies it does). The ability to use books, videos and databases can easily add 2-300 points, especially since not everyone uses those resources. The additional time available can also add some to one's rating along with the use of analysis boards (to help minimize outright blunders).

Add to that the number of people that let their games time out and you can get a pretty decent difference.

I have a large difference in my current OTB rating and online. I'm easily 200 points over-rated here, which would still put me 300 point or so over my current OTB rating; part of that comes from people timing out, part from the fact I mostly play in tourneys and my average opponent rating is close to 1700 (I think I only have one win against anyone over 2000 that wasn't a time out). I am not unique in that.

I Have 1400 -1500 online rating. In Blitz i have 1200-1350 . I look at it as normal to be 200 below your online rating in blitz games.

I do play only 3 mins.  And in bullet im between 1150 and 1350

Blitz and bullets goes up and down all the time depends on the player you play against etc etc.

But beware of players that are 1600 in online and never reach over 1200 in blitz. I do belive they cheat with computers on the online turn base games.

That makes sense to me.

I had two game like that with an FM. He has a lot of games going on at a time, and played his moves really quickly for the most part. I can't say why he played the way he did but based on my games, I just guessed he doesn't take it very seriously and potentially just comes on and blitzes out moves.

I only play really good in slow games, so my ratings here stink. I play a VERY strong game against 2000 uscf, and can beat most 1900 uscf.(But then you come to my online profile and WHAM, you see how bad I play online.)

Actually, blitz is a completely different game than online chess, and it's possible to suck at blitz (like I do , 1030 after a horrible losing streak) but play good moves in standard time controls (1591) or turn based (I'm 1750-ish now but have been 1850), because you have time to think and don't blunder pieces all the time, so just because someone has a huge rating difference between blitz and online doesn't mean he is a cheat...

Im on alert if a player have high online rating and lower blitz. But it do depend on several things. My father for example have over 1600 on blitz but in bullet he is under 1000...

I beat him in 3 mins but not 5+++

One more thing

If you play Blitz specially 3 mins against a computer cheater... He wont be able to move his bricks fast enough. This is a fine way to find out if he is a cheater.
