Open vs Closed

I prefer closed games because I think it makes calculations easier. Open games are so much wilder and there is so much bloodletting !!! I find that I have to watch each square near and far as the tactical possibilities are greater.

What are your thoughts ? Is the choice a reflection of our personalities and confidence ? How do we get out of our comfort zone and learn  to play games not suited to our personalities ?

I think I prefer open games! Yes, I think it depends on our personalities which we like best.

I like open games more, but I clearly score better in closed games. Maybe I will figure this out one day.

i like open games because my brother plays well in closed games (alot better than me anyway) and i'm better than him in open games so i try to create open games. also if you make one mistake in a closed game it is so hard to regroup your losses but on open games checkmates are more common thus even down a piece you may still win.

I guess I prefer semi-open or semi-closed games more than truly open or closed games. For example, the English, Sicilian, Nimzo-Indian, Queen's Indian, Caro-Kann, and Scandinavian are some of my favorite openings.

Spot on ! That's it...even down a piece you may still win but then it also applies to your opponent !Smile I prefer material advantage to be somewhat more lasting.

Yes, it is true that one mistake in a closed game, it's harder to recover.

I don't grab space quickly which means that my preference for closed games often magnifies the cramping problem...however if my opponent is not quick to capitalise on it, I use the slower pace of the closed game to organise my pieces to grab space.

I enjoy both. Open games, especially blitz games, can be unpredictable shoot-outs. But a good closed game has that nice, tense fight for control of every column, row, and diagonal. I think they both have their merit; Violent attacks vs subtle maneuvering.
