otb promotion question

i have never played a serious otb game (just fun games with friends) so i'm curious as to how promotions work.

do you just grab the piece you want, or do you have to declare it first, or what?

You just put the piece you want on the appropriate square. If you wanted a third Bishop (say) you just grab one from an adjacent board (at home/or only one board you would put anything down if you don't have a Bishop (a pawn, an upside Rook {for a Queen usually} or a coin and declare the piece).

p.s. I've just had an idea for a puzzle. :)

This is a good question, I've also asked about this before. I don't think the rules cover it sufficiently:

For example, as far as I understand, a players removes his pawn on the 7th from the board, and declares "Queen". However, he is not bound by this declaration, and he can promote to any piece, the move is only complete when he places the piee on the board.

Touch move does also not apply, he can touch and move the whole set, again, it only counts when he places it on the queening square. I wonder what the rules would be if he placed it on the incorrect square, would he be allowed to promote to a different piece?

I've wondered, in an on the board blitz game, how the clock works.

Assume my opponent has taken my queen, and I promote a pawn and want the queen back.  Does my clock keep running while he gives me the queen?  What's to stop him from stalling, which costs me time?

I rarely play blitz, so this is really just a theoretical question so far as I'm concerned.  I'm just curious.

The player promoting is responsible for placing the appropriate piece on the promotion square. If what he wants is not readily available he may stop the clocks and summon the arbiter to provide the piece he wants.

As queening becomes inevitable, on your opponent's time reach across the table and place your captured queen next to you so when promotion does occur it's right there for you -- this can also be done as some non-verbal boasting/intimidation as if to say, you can't stop me from queening.  If no queen is available just stop the clock and go get one.

See this video @ 0:55 where Akopian moves his captured queen to his side of the table and you can hear Nakamura say "are you kidding?" and starts to play pissed off Laughing
