Other Turn-Based Strategy Games

I made a thread a bit ago looking for another hardcore strategy game like Chess with endless tactics. I was wondering if anyone had found any others besides Zatikon, Shogi,Stratego or xiangqi. Any suggestions would help! Thanks!

checkers?

rooperi

Chess players generally make very good Backgammon or Poker Players.

Although cards or dice may be involved, in the long run strategy plays a greater roll than luck in these games.

Yeah, I know a lot of great chess players who play poker, but I am not the biggest fan of the game. I like board games a lot; more so if I can play them on my computer by myself when I am bored.

How about Settlers of Catan? It's a cool board game, mostly strategical, where you build roads and settlements to expand your empire to gain more points. You kinda need people to play with you though - I'm not sure if you can play it online or not.

I must also mention Civilization IV, although complicated to learn, it becomes addictive. I see the complete version in stores for 20 quid all the time. If you haven't already tried it, it is certainly worth your while.

Eruvadhor

Classic Battletech is the best turn-based strategy game in existence in my opinion.  It's like chess, but much, much more in-depth, and has a very rich storyline.

Is that the game where you "build" your playing board over time with hexagonal tiles?

The chess club I go to features LOTS of chess players, a half dozen go players, a half dozen xiangqi players, and two to four backgammon players.  I've tried all the games, and I like them all, maybe xiangqi less because I play it at the level of a blindfolded infant.

Gundisalvus

Might as well mention Risk, you know someone has too.

Indeed it is, although the board is normally constructed at the start - if you play with the Seafarer's expansion however, you can leave some areas of the map unexplored, and then discover them to place the hexes.

There have been various computer/online implementations of Settlers of Catan, but some of them are rather poorly done. The last "official" one I tried had a horrible random number generator. I got suspicious after playing for a while and did some analysis, and found out that if a number had come up in the last round of play, it was more likely to come up on your roll. I think that was also the version where the AI would ignore obvious wins consistently. But I've played other impementations that weren't that bad.

Interesting and good to know.

That Zatikon looks interesting. Anyone ever played it?

katieskye

Yeah, Zatikon is def a good game I picked it up a few months ago its relatively new. Basically a lot like chess but with a lot of units. The cool thing is its free, and multiplayer so you can play online. I know you can get it off Chronic Logics website, or Zatikon.com   I don't know if anyone else plays it but my s/n on there as it is here so we should play!

Also, does anyone know any board game type games besides risk, checkers, chess?
