Hey Ichabod thanks for the reply I just checked out Octi and I think it is a really cool concept, and free. managed to keep me busy for a few hours so it earns a pass in my book :D Gipf also looks interesting, probably going to have to try it. Well that should at least keep me busy for awhile.

Free Octi? I guess you mean online. I have the old set with the wood pieces. Same for Gipf, but I guess I knew that was online.

Yeah I found it online for free :D I don't have much money being a poor college student etc so I have been looking for mostly free games.

Moving away from chess, Diplomacy is another good turn based game, which works on a completely different mechanics to chess. It is more an exercise in turn based paranoia than strategy but it is very complex and exciting.

The Original forefather of chess is really cool Hnefatafl or known as Kings Table in english. It's an old Viking game that plays a little like chess. I love it.

There are tons of variations but i like to play with two die to see how many spaces a piece can move. THe point of the game is for the Defender with his 12 players and a king to get his king to a corner or edge of the bord while the attacker has 32 players to stop the king.

Actually, the original forefather of Chess is Chaturanga, an Indian game. I don't think anyone has shown a connection between the Tafl family of games and the Chaturanga family of games.

Some of the most popular are Go, Shogi, Othello/Reversi, Checkers, Lines of Action, Amazons, Xiangqi/Chinese chess and Hex.  The newer games Blokus, Hive and the Gipf family are also kind of interesting.  The drops in Shogi give it a sharp combinational character.  Hive has some interesting mechanics.

Lots of the suggestions here are really good, but  I'm surprised nobody's mentioned Backgammon yet. Also for checkers, there are a few different kinds of draughts, the only version that I know has been solved is the common one in America, but the international "Flying Kings" version seems interesting (I've never played it).

I remember playing checkers as a kid before I found chess! Never really got into Backgammon though or heard of the 'Flying Kings' version. There are definately a ton of suggestions on this forum  I need to check out. Def have to check out Diplomacy, any turn based paranoia sounds like my kind of game!
