Outdoor chess around the world?

Great! We've gotten started...please indicate, though, whether the board is a large one with large pieces, or a place where there are outdoor chess tables. For instance, in Washington Square Park in New York, there are outdoor chess tables but there is no large board like there is in the places I mentioned in my first post.

Might be fun to have a "Play Chess Outdoors Day", maybe the 8th of May to encourage all sorts of outdoor activities.

Joubert Park, Johannesburg.
I spent many days (weeks) playinh here in the 80's. When I Googled noe for a recent pic, I cant believe the state of the pieces now. Surely the city council can fix this?

That's sad, maybe you could contact the chess club to contact the city council about it ?

I emailed Radio 702, local station.
Ray White presenter replied to me, saying he'll bring it up on his show tomorrow.

Rather horrifyingly... that's what it looks like. Maybe they're just setting up a position, though I doubt it.
Greetings, all! My wife and I just got back from our second trip to Europe in three years, and we have enjoyed finding places where people play chess outdoors, preferably with large pieces on a large board in a park somewhere. I would like to compile a list of cities/locations where this happens, so that I know where to find it! My findings in the last two trips:
Luzern, Switzerland - in a park right in the middle of the city. Played four games there two years ago, and really enjoyed it.
Zurich, Switzerland - on a hill called the Lindenhof, found three boards, two of which were being used, and played a couple of games. Good group there.
Vienna, Austria - In Danau Park, somewhat near the Alte Danau metro stop. It is a large park, but there are signs showing where the "Baden Shach" is. Great crowd here, and got to play a game as well as comment.
Salzburg, Austria - There is a large board and pieces in one of the major squares in the old town, but they were not being used when we were there two years ago.
Lausanne, Switzerland - One large board down by the water. I played here all day one day in July 1992. I have no idea whether the board is still there, but it remains one of my best memories of that trip.
Please add to this list, indicating (if you know) if the board is used year-round or just in the summer. I think it would be neat to have a worldwide list on this site. Not just Europe, but everywhere...
If someone has already put together a thread for this, please point me to it, and I will post there.
I also saw a board in Savannah, Georgia, USA when we were there last year, but it was set up in a really bad spot (no shade, and it was really hot, and it seemed you had to rent the pieces).
Thanks!
