Overcoming inconsistent play?

I am looking for pratical solutions for a problem I have been experiencing, inconsistant play.  I am trying to pin down what causes my play to be very solid (even though I might lose) one day and absolutely horrendous the next.  I'm sure it's a combination of factors but what can I do to mitigate this?  Anybody have suggestions on rituals of game prep, etc. before play?

Hi Martin,

I think that might be related to many things, but I think the most common reasons could be:

* Styleof play

* Nerves

* Not applying a method

Hope that helps

well, it's definitely not nerves. can you elaborate more on "applying a method"? for example, do you mean like a series of steps or a "checklist" for each move?

I'd like to say I am working on the same thing.

think about this idea. I ask you what 2+2 is and even if you are demolished running on no sleep talking to a cute girl the answer is there without any effort. For good chess players this is how tactics are, they can see a skewer 10 moves ahead in a position they are visualizing in their mind.

This is the truth of understanding, when people "get" a concept they are still normally worlds away from a complete full understanding.

The saying I heard that made me think of this was

 "Amateurs practice till they get it right.

Professionals practice till they can't get it wrong."

Martin, on good days I am around 1450. Today I'm all the way down to 1200. I think it's a matter of getting a streak of openings I am not that familiar with.

And, I rarely ever look back at lost games for any semblance of standard mistakes. I play on the ipad and the iphone all the time.

I guess if you're serious, you will need to spot repetitive mistakes and correct them. Use an engine to analyze post games.

thanks, always nice to find strong players agreeing with me, makes me feel I'm headed the right direction.

Yeah you might be missing tactics. Being well rested is important as well because it's just too hard to keep track of tactics or anything else when you're tired.
