Palm Zire owners

I think I can get a decent palm Zire 22 or 71 for $25-$40, but I want to see how well HIARCS for it works first.  I've read reviews and such and heard good things but I want to see it in action!

The only other option I see is going with something like an iPhone, but I'm not willing to spend a few hundred dollars for essentially what's going to be a handheld chess device, which is what I'll be using it for.

For what it's worth - I have a Zire gathering dust in a drawer. The Palm software is no longer updated - there is no active app development for it, and it's been hard to load applications on it from a modern OS.

Consider watching craigslist or ebay for an ipod touch 8 GB. I frequently see them for less than $100. Much better device than the Zire... has built in wifi, and can run chess.com's mobile app.

Machinecraig is right, keep a lookout for iPod touch or if you really want an iPhone consider the 3GS version, you can find them at AT&T for really cheap ($50???) since it's the older version. Mine works great. I have shredder, stockfish , and chess.com app on it.

Anyway, yeah, the 3GS iPhones are on sale for $49.

I've only got a 2nd Generation iPod (they're up to the 4th), but Fritz and Shredder mop the floor with me. I don't have Hiarcs for it, though. (I got Shredder and Fritz when they are on sale. I think Fritz plays slightly better, but it has a terrible UI)

I think I'll manage. The Zire 22 was released in '05 for example, well after Windows XP was released, so compatibility should exist.  I'm not really concerned about the software it comes with as I won't be using them that much.  I would just turn it into a dedicated handheld chess device for studying games, playing occasionally against the engine etc.  I just want a capable, flexibile mobile chess device, everything else besides iphones/ipad touches seem far inferior (I'm looking at you Saitek Maestro).  With that said though, I have considered the iPod Touch and was just looking at them on Craigslist a little bit ago.  Seems reasonable too.

Nah, don't want to be locked into a contract.
