Generally outside, so that they don't get blocked by them in your half of the board. But one should also remember a "bad" bishop can be a good defender.
Pawn chains and bishops

I thought so.... Why do I so often wish they were on the other side?
If cows could talk they would tell you that the grass on the other side of the fence always appears to be greener. Same goes for chess, when things look disappointing where your bishop is placed, the other side of the pawn chain seems to look better. As with the cow, it could just be an illusion. But as with the cow, sometimes one has to sample it to learn which is the case. Oh, but hat the cow may not know is that what made that grass greener may not be good for the cow. Same goes for chess, because opponents sometimes make it look good, and that is called a trap. I can speak with experience in this case, because I have fallen for such traps far too often. Shamefully so, at times.
Do bishops generally belong inside or outside pawn chains?
Is it different for QB and KB?
Is it different for Black and White?
