Pawn names

I was told that you can construct your "pawn name" by taking the name of your first pet and the maiden name of your mother (Butch Rimmer in my case - so it doesn't always work very well).  I have believed for a long time now that the pawns have been unfairly under-represented on the nomenclature front.  So to redress the balance for the boys (and girls) of the front row I have come up with an ingenious method of my own devising for naming them.  I call them:

Angharrad; Brynach; Cerys; Dafydd; Eurwen; Ffion; Gwynedd; and Heddwynn

(They are named after the letter of the file that they start on - genius!! I have a world-wide patent pending so don't even think about it)

It really helps with my chess notation and I usually open with the unconventional Brynach 4.  I take much greater care of my pawns having named them all - they are like a  second family to me. On my home set I have even painted little faces on their big spherical heads so that I can more easily tell them apart.  On the downside in the recent Welsh Open tournament I cried like a bereaved father when Cerys was taken from me early doors during a vicious Sicillian trap. (I made her a new dress when we got home to make it up to her).

This must be a fairly common practice - so I would like to know what names you use for your own pawns?

I call all of mine Mewto. It's confusing, but having 8 pawns on the M file helps when I play Chuck Norris.

My pawns are clones. Except one of them, which is rather runty compared to the others. (about half the size)

What if your opponent executes order 66? You would be at a huge disadvantage then, seeing as you will be in mate very shortly.

Hopefully, there is a Medical Cure for your condition. I like to call my pawns... pawns, believe it or not. I also have never painted a dress for any of them to cheer them up!

I think you should go with those funny little men in thier clean white coats...

Maybe e4forme is on to something Popinjay - you should make outfits for the pawns and sell them.  It might be the next big thing.

wow!!!  i thought i was the only one who gave the pawns of my prized (weighted) Drucke chess set, names!!!  But i also have given the pieces names!!!  The Queens are named after two old girlfriends of mine... I won't reveal the names of the other pieces yet....   And i thought i was the only one doing this sort of thing!!!!Surprised   Also sometimes at the dinner table i set places for some members of my chess set......Sadly i can't dine with all of them at once because i just don't have enough space at the dinner table...and i can't cook all day!!  I am glad to see i am not the only one who is "into" this sort of thing!!

That's very cool, And if Fisher can become Capablanca on the way to promotion, wow that's something! ( couple of captures you see....)

The knights can be Karpov and Kasparov?  Or Nunn and Najdorf?  Rooks are Rubinstein and?

Daniel3

Rooks are Rubinstein and Reti.

Pawns: Alekhine, Botvinnik, Christiansen, David, Euwe, Fischer, Grunfeld, and Huebner.

Knights: Kramnik and Karpov.

Bishops: Bronstein and Browne.

King: Kasparov.

Queen: Polgar?

From now on, pawns are no longer called pawns. Instead they are...Pachmans! Laughing
