PAWN OR PIECE WORTH IN TERMS OF RATING POINTS

How much is a pawn worth ( starting the game only, not passed, promoting or giving mate lol) in terms of rating points? I have seen estimates between 50-200 points. My best guess is 80 but I am very unsure of that. Lets get some opinions. Thanks,

Interesting question. I think it would vary quite a bit between center pawns and say b or g pawns. A or H pawns depending on the level could probably be a benefit

Good point. I think in an odds game they usually remove the a pawn, so lets make it the a pawn. Mostly looking at it just as a pawn or a piece, rook or Queen starting the game not related to position.  Of course with the Queen it is not a question as to which one. lol

You gonna start giving pawn odds to those ranked lower than you, like the chess masters of old?

Depends on the strength of the players. With two very weak players, a pawn is practically nothing, and even a piece may not mean that much. At the elite GM level a pawn odds would be huge.

Great points listed above! Another factor would be the time control. For most players, the faster the time control, the less significant material odds would be.

It really depends on the level of the players. You can use this Elo win probability calculator to calculate material odds for different rating ranges.

For example at the 500 level a pawn is only worth about 50 rating points.

At the 1500 level a pawn is worth about 125 rating points.

At the 2500 level a pawn is worth about 300 rating points

Michael, I think your answer is what I was looking for. Thanks

It’s not linear. One pawn is often gambited. Down two pawns between good players is usually lethal unless there is a strong mating attack.
