A pawn promotion is when White or Black's pawns reach their opponent's side of the board they get a piece back or they are aloud to get the same peice. (Example you have a queen and then you promote your pawn and get a second queen it doesn't matter if you already have a queen) You may promote your pawn to a queen, rook,knight and bishop. When you promote and get a queen it is called queening when you promote to any other piece it is called underpromotion. Which means it doesn't happen as often as promoteing a queen is WAYYYYYYY more popular.
