oh okay, that makes sense. couldn't the players use that time pause to think, though?

In Canada we used to just fight over the single available spare Queen.

When you play chess online and promote a pawn, there's an infinite number of pieces to promote to.
Is there really? Chess.com may indeed say they have an unlimited supply of virtual queens, but... oh, well... if they have as many as 502 error pages, I guess we are fine.
I want a verbose chess set: 1 king, 9 queens, 10 rooks, 10 bishops, 10 knights, and 10 pawns.
That might double the cost of your chess set...or even more. Just to cater to an event which is quite unlikely to happen in a proper game.
Wait hang on. What are the two extra pawns for?
When you play chess online and promote a pawn, there's an infinite number of pieces to promote to. For instance, you can have 3 queens on your side if you manage to promote the pawns. But in person on a real chess board there's not gonna be another, for instance, queen piece just lying around for you to put in the pawn's place. What do you do?
In friendly games, I use "doubled pawns" or "inverted rook" to denote a queen in the absence of a proper queen.
I have yet to promote to bishops or knights in a very casual game where none of my bishops or knights have been captured. In this scenario, I wouldn't be exactly sure of the combination to represent a promoted bishop or knight.

I get what you are saying, but technically the number of pieces you can promote to (online or otb) is not infinite. Even online, there are a finite number of promotions possible (Knight, Bishop, Rook or Queen) and also a finite number of squares available for your Queens (or other promoted pieces) once you promote. Furthermore, you only begin the chess game with 8 pawns, so really you can only promote up to 8 times in a game; 16 times if you include the opponent promotions.
Also, even in OTB chess tournaments, if there are no spare Queen(s) (or other pieces) available, you can still promote my using an inverted Rook as a Queen.
