You can set it to auto-queen in the options.
There are some cases where promoting to a queen would result in a stalemate.

There is also the very rare chance that promoting to a knight will deliver an immediate check which could be advantageous or perhaps checkmate.
When would a promotion to a queen produce a stalemate and a rook/bishop not?
It's pretty simple, queen cuts off diagonal that king would be able to move to so there is stalemate.
AS "PROMOTEDPAWN" I get to decide ----> I like becoming Queens and Knights. Why would I become a rook or a bishop? They suck in comparison.

Started thinking about this when I had to select a Queen for my pawn promotion in a game as my clock was running out and a few more seconds ticked off as I made my "selection"...
Are there any feasible circumstances in which one would rationally select a rook, knight or bishop over a queen? If not, why shouldn't pawns automatically be promoted to queens?
