Pawn Sacrifice (2014), that movie. A retrospective look.

I wasn't able to follow the tumult over the opening of this film in the United States a few weeks ago.  Would you agree this film came and went with nary a blip on the screen?

No buzz, no word of mouth, no box office.  Aren't you a bit disappointed that after three years of hype -- the film pretty much disappeared and left nothing in its wake?

Not to brag, but I know a few "artsy" type people, including hardcore film buffs, and none of them had any opinion on this film, perhaps other to express surprise that Tobey Maguire is still acting.

I wanted to see it but it never got closer than 50 miles.

// I don't know how you can blame Tobey Maguire for the film's weak box office. It got a 71% Rotten Tomatoes rating, which is pretty good.  Most people just don't care about chess and people who know anything about Fischer know that the movie won't have a feel good ending.

I'm not blaming Tobey Maguire for the film's weak box office.  How on earth did you construe that?

It was already selectively "released" in 2014 amid rave reviews.

In 2015, the hyped re-release was a just an anti-climax.

Last week, I could have driven 20 miles to the single theatre which showed it, but I'll just wait for the bit-torrent instead.

the movie showed in my town only on one screen for two weeks. I did go see it and was pleased enough to give it a passing grade; however, there was little interest from the public and mostly older folks were the ones at the theater. I am sure there's plenty of thesis writing to be done on the public's low interest level here but there's little we can do. our game survives though.

It's about eighteen months later and still nada . . . this film was certainly no La La Land.
