PC, Mac or iPad Pro for chess? Or none... spend it on a nice wood board?!

I am an adult beginner and have a little more money than sense. My laptop is old and my gaming tower is now my wife’s business computer. I no longer have interest in MMO’s anyway. I am also heavily invested in Apple, 3 Apple TV’s, 4 Apple watches, 4 iPhones and 2 older iPads in the house.
In order to replace my old iPad and laptop with one purchase, I find myself wondering if I should stay with a PC laptop or get more invested in the Apple ecosystem with either a Macbook, iMac, or iPad. Which one would be best for chess? I know iPads would be restricted to Apps and some programs aren’t available on Mac.
Does it even really matter as I am an adult beginner? Should I just stick with chess.com for mobile chess and buy a nice wood board? Thoughts and opinions are appreciated!

why don't try with android based tablet, comparing to the laptops, battery will hold much longer, easier to carry arround, and there are many good chess apps in store.

I would get a nice wood board just to have a wood board ( and I do have 2 nice wood boards) I have pc with Chess V. 100 loaded and it is a magnificent program that allows human vs. human or human vs . computer play and allows you to save the games in all popular chess analysis formats.

iPad Pro. I have PCs, 2-1 pc, Mac and iPads. It’s far more convenient on the iPad to play.

I second the iPad Pro.

Good to know about the iPad Pro. I am currently using an iPad 6th gen and it actually is working quite well. I also like to paint and wouldn’t mind having the use of an Apple Pencil 2.
Android is not an option. I have bought the highest end Android Tablets and they pale in comparison to the performance of an iPad.

The Ipad is the only apple product with absolutely no competition.

I purchased a Galaxy A21 inexpensive phone a few months and ago and use three chess apps and have absolutely no issues. But, I am also very frugal when it comes to spending. I also have a PC that I play chess on using this site and another. The phone is small, granted. However, I use my readers and life is fine. I'm an older player too and just getting into chess. I love it! I would enjoy an iPad too, don't get me wrong...but, I don't feel I need to fork out the money for one just to play chess. Especially because I am in front of a PC all day! Anyhoo, if you enjoy painting then yes, I can see why you'd want an iPad. Good Luck! BTW, anyone ever wants to play a match on here hit me up. happy.png

I think it depends what you want to do: “best for chess” is quite subjective. If all you want to do is play, then an iMac is just overkill imo.

For stuff like puzzle rush/puzzle battle, I prefer my iPad Pro, for blitz/bullet I’m better at using my phone (the relatively tiny screen is easier for me) but for something more serious I use my laptop.

But I don’t think a newer iPad has that much advantage over a  older one when it’s just for chess..

Trust me, just take a laptop and a mouse. They are powerful and easy to use. There are so many resources online for chess, so you need a electronic device. A mouse is needed in fast chess.

Hi

The more expensive the device you buy, the better you will be at playing chess. Take that for sure. And if you buy two or three devices you will be unbeatable. Certified.

I'm pretty sure Magnus owns at least 3 devices, so there is that.

An iPad touchscreen is great for rapid or longer games; you’ll want to connect a mouse for faster time controls though. Some PC laptops also have far superior hardware compared to MacBooks for the price

I just got an 2022 IPad Pro 6th Generation M2 chip and have been looking for what to use with it for chess studying and game analysation. I’m surprised to find out there’s nothing that’s complete like chessbase for IOS. There’s a few that have good engines and ,I think, nice functional GUI’s, but those don’t seem to have database and the endgame tables and all of the bells and whistles. I think this M2 chip is quit capable and hope there’s something coming that will do it justice. Until then I guess I’ll try SmallFish and chess studio unless someone out there has some better solutions. Thanks
