Perseverance Stories :)

Anyone want to share a story of when you hit a slump in chess, what adjustments you made, how long it took to correct, and where it got you? I'm sure everyone reading would appreciate the encouraging stories. Cheers!

That is great! What did you do to get over that hump and how long did it take to get to 1000?

M_L_1
About since I started. Took me like a week to jump
cyboo
From 500 to 1200 in blitz since I joined (two to three months). Took me a while. Was irritating, but I persevered and learnt that bullet was harming my chess. I stopped playing bullet, and my blitz slowly improved! Yayayayayayayayayayayayayayayayay!

I was stuck in the 800s on the tactics trainer for the longest time and I recently improved to the 1000s. The book, Tactics from Scratch, has been helping.

Not to hate, but all of these statements about rating improvements are kind of artificial. It’s clear that both molo-molo and cyboo were clearly underrated since they progressed so quickly within a week. Once ratings stabilize, you’ll have to really grind and study to even get 100-200 points in a year.

Boo cello master u buzzkill

It’s one of many harsh truths. Eventually you’ll see your rating graphs stabilizing like a log graph. I’m only speaking from what I and others have experienced from before. In a sense, this is also a perseverance story too
cyboo
That may be true, but it was very hard for me at first, and still is now...anyway, I suppose that it is the cold hard fact.
cyboo
And I wasn’t underrated.
cyboo
I just fell prey to the toxic bullet. After that, I slowly improved.

But how come I shot up like a heroin users shoots up?
cellomaster8
True cyboo, very true

I'm not sure if I agree 100% with your assessments of these players. It looks like molo put in his time to get better at bullet and sometimes improvement is not linear and can happen in spurts. But you're probably right about the slow stable growth/grind and those can be encouraging stories too.
