placement of captured pieces

I'm new to playing OTB and wanted to know if there was a rules about where the captured pieces have to be placed.  I only ask because at a club I visted recently I saw a man yell at his opponent for not placing the captured pieces on the left next to the captured pieces of opposite colour.

Is this a rule or ettiquette?

I don't know about Canada, but as far as I know, there is no such rule in FIDE, nor in Sweden.

I usually place them all next to the game, except for one pawn that I usually place behind the clock, screws with the opponents mind, so many people are accustumed to counting the pieces off the board, rather than on it.

Fide laws of chess only stipulates that captured piece must be taken of the board (completely normal). There is no rule as where should the captured piece should be placed. Most of the people I've seen on the tournaments puts the captured pieces below its side of the board, some puts it on a left/right side, next to clock.

But this is all custom I would say, after all, one captured the pieces and its IMO his choice to put it where he wants. A notable exception would be a rapid game when pawns are to be promoted, so it is nice to prepare a queens to be at hand, for quick placement once promotion has occurred.

Article 3: The moves of the pieces

3.1

It is not permitted to move a piece to a square occupied by a piece of the same colour. If a piece moves to a square occupied by an opponent’s piece the latter is captured and removed from the chessboard as part of the same move. A piece is said to attack an opponent’s piece if the piece could make a capture on that square according to the Articles 3.2 to 3.8.

There's no rules or even etiquette on this. You are free to place it anywhere you like.

The yelling man must have been an amateur. Real chess players count the material by seeing what's on the board rather than what is captured.

I personally just place the pieces opposide side of the board of where the clock is located (behind my drink if i have one), so that if it comes to blitz it's not in the way. But there's no real rules or etiquette on this.
