a) contact them privately

b) be polite

c) make a straight forward request to play.

d) understand that they may not respond but if they do, they may suggest an unrated game.

e) play to the best of your ability and if you show promise for whatever reason. they may wish to play again.

d) remember that you are trying to create a mentoring relationship not a combative one. they are agreeing to spend thier precious time to teach you. be receptive to learning.

For a small fee I know of several British G.Ms who will study 4 or so games scores you have played by post and would play through your games and return them to you with there notes on your games highlighting your play and suggestions on improvements!!?
