players that are losing and then run the clock out.

I'm guessing other people deal with this, and I am curious what the standards are for this, and if there is anything I can do other than block the member, because I keep running into them.  I'm kind of new to chess, and am playing 30 minute games to give myself a little more time if I need it.  The last 3 games I've played I've had it down to the point where I'd win pretty soon (1-3 moves to mate), and then the player just sits there for the next 20 minutes (in which case I have to stick around the computer).  Occasionally they'll try and sneak a move in 18 minutes down the road, and I'm guessing it's because they are hoping I left, and then will get my clock running.

Is there anybody with suggestions on this or am I stuck waiting?  It's pretty frustrating. Thanks

CoenJones

yeah, sorry, but your stuck waiting. however, you should hear a sound when they make their move, so maybe you could play online chess and check the forums while you wait Laughing

hope that helped!

You still win when their clock runs out. Don't worry about it.

SteveL23

Thanks.

But it doesn't help, lol.  I woke up in the middle of the night, and couldn't sleep for a bit, so figured I'd play a quick game before going back to bed. Then ended up having to wait for 20 minutes for this guy, bleh.

No more middle of the night chess I suppose, haha.

Is there certain groups that are better at not being dicks?  Like 15 minute games?  10 minute games? players over 1200?

Open a new game when you meet those games. when they move, the game they play will be highlighted.

PS: if you have to leave the computer in the time of waiting , maybe u should not play that long-time-control game because if they are not losing , you are losing by time .

I tried opening a new game once, and as soon as I did it then the 1st guy started playing again.  I've only been playing a few weeks, so playing 2 games at the same time is pretty challanging.

I'll probably start playing quicker games I guess.  Waiting 5 minutes for someone isn't the end of the world. But half hour (when you have other stuff to do) is a bit of a piss off.

It's a disgrace in 30min games. You get the points but it devalues the chess.com experience. If someone did that at a chess club the game would be abandoned right??

Chess.com need to do something about it . Even half the remaining time to make your move. Close this loophole.

For those who run the clock, don’t complain and whine if people send you nasty messages in response. Running the clock is rude; when you open the door to rudeness, you can’t complain when people are rude in return. And you don’t get to set the rules for how rude people get to be toward you. If you don’t like rude people, then don’t act rude. Furthermore, just FYI: when you run the clock, you’re blatantly showing your opponent that you’re devastated by the loss. It’s a real lame move from a strategic perspective. Not only have you lost, but you’re showing that you’re crushed by the loss.

People are rude in verything. Obviously, it's worse the longer the time control is just because they have more time to run down. I believe if somebody does it a lot they can be banned. The solution is to block the person and when you see they are running down the clock do something else. For instnace open youtube and listen to a video while having live chess as the open tab.

I've had this a lot  - 15 minute games and only say 750-900 rated.  I turn the volume up so I hear the ping as they move with a minute or so left on the clock.  It's obvious and annoying.  I block them and report them too.  Not sure if it's reportable, but I think it should be and surely if someone is reported a lot they should get a warning at least?

If there’s nothing wrong with running out the clock, then what’s wrong with naming them on this forum? Naming is fine as long as you’re not saying something bad about the person. And since running the clock is not bad, technically, then saying that so and so runs the clock is not a bad thing. That’s something that can be done against them; name them on this forum. That way no one will play against them. Everyone will just block them. I repeat: since there’s obviously nothing wrong with running the clock – – seeing as there’s no consequence for it – – then there should be no problem with naming them on this forum. Nobody wants to play against a whiny clock runner. People keep saying there’s nothing you can do about it; well that tells me that technically there’s nothing wrong with running the clock. So, go ahead and name our way; name them, named them, named them on this forum.

When you go to report someone one of the options is stalling/quitting...

I think there must be at least 3 min rule. If an opponent does not move in 3 minutes, he must get lose.

Join a club that doesn't allow that sort of crap. Play against other club members... and if they pull that sort of cheap trick, have the Club Admin kick them out.

There are hundreds of Clubs on this site...

ya it just means they are mad, report them for stalling and they still lose

JessieMillano

I'm sorry about that. But they have a right to let their time expire. After all, that is their time, not yours. If they want to waste it, that's their right. Let them be.
